I'm planning to travel on the Kangra Valley Railway from Pathankot to Bir in February. I had though of an over night stop off at Kangra but I have read on here that it is difficult to get a seat if you board at Kangra. I can travel to Kangra and see the sites on a different day so I donít need to get off there. Iíd like to spend at least one night at Bir and climb up to Aju Fort. I donít expect to see much at the fort but it is something that I have wanted to do for a few years. Any tips on Bir, Aju fort, Kangra stop off etc. From Bir I will be heading back to McLeod Ganj. Any tips on transportation. I was thinking of just taking the local bus.
Tips on the train ride and obscure or popular sites of interest will be of value as I will have about a month in the Kangra Valley.
Does anyone have a current link to the train schedule? Should I buy tickets in advance or is ok to pick them up in Pathankot on the day of the trip?

Be aware that it's a verreeeee slooow train ride & compared to other toy trains such as Shimla, not that exciting (I was disappointed). If you have a month to spare i'd suggest going for the Shimla route via Mandi, you could stop at Rewalsar Lake & go up to see Padmasambhava's cave, on a clear day the view of the distant snow capped peaks from there is stunning, Rwalsar is verreee laid back compared to Mcleod. The Train schedule is here: http://erail.in?T=PTK::PLMX:

Where is this Aju fort ?
I did not fully understand the dread term "Terminal Illness" until I saw Terminal 1 D of Delhi Airport.

Any accomodation at Bir? How is Billing nearby? How scenic is the place. I heard the Dhauladhar range can be seen from these places
....life is a journey.....and the journey is more important than the destination........

Hi everyone thank you for all of the information. Aju fort is very near Bir and appears to be not much more than a crumbling ruin. I drove past it a few years ago.
Kullukid, I heard that the train ride is more interesting past Kangra. Is that true? I spent a year in McLeod and there were quite a few things that I didn't do in the valley. The train ride was one of them. I'll be fine with the slowness but if the Dhauladhar range is the only sight of interest it may not be worth it for me.
I've been to Rewalsar before but I will be going again on this trip as I am travelling with a friend who has not been there. It is everything that you say it is and is one of my favorite places.
Have you spent time in Mandi? Any other suggestions for Kangra valley? I'm visiting friends in McLeod so I won't be straying too far I don't think but I will be up for spending a night or two elsewhere every now and then.
I too am very interested in Bir accomodation.
Bhaswaran I don't remember where the best views that I have seem were but if no one else knows I'll fill you in when I get back in March. There are plenty of places with great views but I have forgotten their locations!

Stupid me, it is spelled Ahju Fort. There are some photo's on Flickr and almost no information when I Google it. If I find out more I will post the info. It can still be seen from the car an hour after you have driven past it. I like ruins and I thought it would be a nice walk.

It's more interesting coming the other way from Jogindernagar, sounds like you'd be better off going via Shimla for Toy Train,it's a different class to Kangra TT. Yes I've stayed in Mandi many times,do a search on Raj Mahal Palace Hotel, former home & still run by Royal family of Mandi, there are lots of verrreeee old Hindu Temples to see in Mandi.
Baijnath Temple is worth a visit. KK

The drive from Dharamshala To Bir Via Baijnath one can see Dhauladhars as good as the train ride. There are loads of accommodation option in bir, if one is interested in living in the Tibetan colony there is a neat place run by the monastery too !!

Once In Bir not much of a chance spotting the dhauladhars due to the geographical location even in billing one doesnt have a good view of the mountains either but the sunset at billing is simply mindblowing.

These sunset pics were taken in billing last year.
