jaipur to shimla/simla

Dear all,

I have just now joined the forum. Actually I and my friends wish to visit Himachal Pradesh in second half of june. We plan to stay for 8-9 days there and cover as much as we can. The point is we only wish to travel from Jaipur to HP by train, and unfortunately there are no direct ones. We cant go by bus as one of us' parents didn't allow. So we being students can only afford a train (no flights, obviously).
Can you help me out figuring a way to reach shimla/kalka (or whatever possible) by ONLY TRAIN (or not more than 2 hrs of bus)and give every detail for a fun trip from your side (cheap hotels, less than Rs. 1000 per day are welcomed), I mean suggestions and your experiences?
I'd be extremely grateful if you guide us through:) :) :) .

Early morning, 5.50 am from Bayana - you can catch the 2925 Paschim Express all the way to Kalka. And if you are willing to start even earlier, upto 1 hour, you can catch the same train at Gangapur or Hindaun.
May not be very convenient, as you still have to reach one of these places from Jaipur.
Also, this train reaches Kalka at 4.30 pm, at which time it'll be too late to catch a train to Shimla, which wud anyway take 5 hours. A bus will get you to Shimla in 2.5 to 3 hours.

Ohter than that, you will have to take a train to Delhi, then another one from Old Delhi for Kalka. This wud also work best for you if you want to avoid bus travel - e.g. the Kalka Mail is a night train which will get you to Kalka early morning, in time to catch the first train to Shimla.

Do look in the HP forum for hotel and other info, there's loads of it. Cheers.

There is a direct train from Jaipur to Chakki Bank, Pathankot. This is your entry point to the Kangra Valley of Himachal. You can take a share jeep to Dharamsala and visit the Tibetan township at Mcleodganj.
Also from Pathankot you can take the toy train to Jogindernagar. Stop at Kangra to visit the temples, also at Jwalamukhi.
Next you can proceed to Mandi, Kullu and Manali.
Or go direct to Simla if you prefer.
Return via the Simla Kalka train, on to Chandigarh. Go back to jaipur.

There's a direct overnight Jaipur-Chandigarh Garib Rath train, it departs Jaipur on Tuesday, Friday and Sunday only at 20.05 and gets to Chandigarh at 06:35, the train has 3 tier air con, though because it's a Garib Rath, the carriage has been redigned to have more berths, but it's still a great way to travel, and cheap too, Rs 469 per person.

From Chandigarh, either make your way to Kalka for the train to Shimla or get a bus.
