Hi all,

I need a week in a green place with pine/deodar forests and mountains. Manali area seems to fit the bill. Would love suggestions for a seven day sojourn in the area.

Details:

Temples are not a draw for me.

That said, I do like historic sites, places to relax while sipping tea and gazing out at pine/deodar-scented mountain views, etc.

Have no trekking experience, so hikes would have to be short -- and safe, as we will be two women.

Have no interest in drugs, so no need to tweak itinerary to include party spots.

Have been to Ladakh before and thought it gorgeous, but it's a different kind of scenery from what I'm yearning for; besides, I am intent on seeing new places.

SO, with all that in mind, and after searching through old posts, can any HP experts help me put together a nice seven day journey?

Am thinking --

June 1st: depart Delhi for Manali.
June 2nd: arrive Manali, stay in Old Manali because it's quieter. Explore the town.
June 3rd: shift to Solang? Stay in Solang for a night, visit Dhundi (this is a day hike, right?)
June 4th: Rohtang Pass
June 5th: ??
June 6th: ??
June 7th: ?? Return to Delhi? OR
June 8th: return to Delhi.

It's the latter portion of the itinerary where I get confused. Should I try to go to Naggar? To Tirthan Valley? To Mandi and thence Janjheli? I want this trip to be relaxing, have no interest in trying to squeeze in a lot and exhaust myself from long hours on buses. Advice much appreciated!

(Edited to add: my traveling partner wants to keep costs down on hotels, so suggestions for finding inexpensive, friendly, clean, quiet guesthouses also welcome!)

Hey there,
Iīm also leaving Delhi the same day as you! 1st June for Mandi on the main Manali road. Manali I know quite well...Iīve been there twice. I recommend you to stay up at Vaschist, Arohi Guest House is a great option with amazing views of the snow peaks from bed even! Phone owner on 09816042139. You can bargain his price down if you stay some days.
But how are you getting up there? If you havenīt already got tickets maybe we could travel up that way together and I can give more tips en route. Iīm solo female.
I think the Manali area is quite spoilt now by excessive visitors and rubbish, although the valley is still so beautiful. I was there in 2006 and again 2009 and Solang for example has been ruined in that time....massive road-building and development. But I like things quiet and unspoilt nature so I donīt want to put you off.
Iīm also thinking along the lines of Janjehli.....should be much quieter there. Thatīs why Iīm going for Mandi...then up into the hills east , also Chindi and Karsog look great if you google them.
Let me know your travel plans. In Delhi Iīll be in Paharganj area.

Ditto with the dates

Ditto with the dates.

I'm not sure where to go - have neither been to Manali nor Leh. So, still contemplating which would be better.

The information that I've gathered from friends and the internet - Manali seems more of a "couply" place to visit (I'm a a male solo traveller from Bangalore); though beautiful landscapes in its own ways. And, pehaps, this time of the year will be filled with lots of couple tourists?

Given the timeliness I'm operating with, I think I wouldn't enjoy Leh, as much as I'd want to. So, Manali is an option.

What's your take?

Hi PM,
Youīre right Manali will be full of Indian tourists and their cars. Dusty and polluted. At least it was last year this time. It depends if you like hanging out in cafes with lots of people or just hiking in the beautiful countryside and early to bed? Me, Iīm the latter of the 2 options.
If you have little time donīt waste it all travelling, Leh is a long way to go.
Iīm heading to a remote area, find a nice family guest house or homestay, and enjoy walks and the scenery.
Letīs see if Lindsay answers and what their priorities are.

Manali is amazing..go to naggar, walk upto the krisna temple and explore the area, drive upto mana(or jana) falls then go to solang valley.
Walk upto the the solang waterfalls, then keep a day for dundi.about 7km from solang. Start early, spend the day in dhundi exploring the forests, waterfalls, peaks and come back by evening.
I also found te river to be really beautiful just a few km before manali, then jagatsukh is also a nice place to explore.
Check the hptdc site for homestays. Stay in naggar.

I certainly want to meet people, and get to interact with them. And, by no means I'm a early to bed person...the party animal in me

You're right, I think Leh is way off for me. After reading to several threads, I think Manali > Parvati Valley > back home is what fits the bill or any other place close to Manali.

On that note, do you know of hostels or accommodations in Parvati Valley? Any help would be great.

Not many options, I suppose.

Cinta - What's your plan?

Cheers,
PM

Heading first maybe to Chindi, Karsog, Janjehli, Banjar Valley, all of them east of the main Mandi to Manali road. Donīt know the order of those places though.
But we have very different priorities....Iīm not into parties at all. Up early with the dawn and the bird song...thatīs me.
Strange...Who started this thread was Lindsay...but never a word more from her? Maybe she would like to team up with you for Manali?
Iīm more interested in sharing a taxi from Chandigarh, Kalka or Shimla up to any of the above places. Donīt yet have transport from Delhi booked, but plan to go up to HP on 1st June.

Sorry, you guys! I kept refreshing for responses for a day, but when none came, I forgot about it, then work got crazy and I lost track of everything!

We are going up by bus this evening, so if you see some firangs on board, call out "Lindsay!" and see if one of us responds! LOL.

Based on everyone's advice both here and off-board, I'm not booking a hotel, we will arrive in the morning and find a place. However, we are definitely making time for Naggar and Dhundi and Solang Valley, with a day trip to Rohtang Pass.

Lindsay, let me know the date when you're off to Rohtang pass - may be, we can go together or something.

I'm leaving from Delhi in a few hours to Kasol, and then plan to go to Manali after 2-3 nights.

Ditto with booking the hotels, I haven't booked either.

And, if we don't happen to cross paths here's a shout out - "lindsay!!"

Have fun!
