Not doable I suppose...stick to Shimla and the adjoining areas since upper reaches in Spiti will be full of snow and won't be able to reach Manali from Kaza directly as Kunzum will be closed.

ram0345 Nov 20th, 2017 11:58

thanks ghoshal,
in that case could you or any one plz set a quick itinerary from Simla to Kaza for 5/6 days.

aarosh Nov 20th, 2017 12:02

See if A Himachal Pradesh trip report through Kinnaur and Spiti - April 2008 helps.

Ghosal Nov 20th, 2017 12:09

As said earlier, reaching Kaza in that period of the year is always a risky affair. However, general itinerary is Shimla-Sarahan-Kalpa-Tabo-Kaza-Rampur-Shimla for 5/6 days trip but highly not recommended. Not only cold and and snow clad roads are factor but also the altitude. You are not getting acclimatized properly in this plan.

LOWKEY_ Nov 29th, 2017 16:57

depending upon weather conditions and with the aid of a good 4x4, you can go upto kaza via shimla and back same way. spiti winter drives are getting quite popular these days. but stay options would be very limited.

srb810 Nov 29th, 2017 21:33

The roads are a mess even during summers, so you can appreciate the conditions during heavy snow.... although doable, but you should have ample spare time (lest you are caught in one of the snowstorms that blocks roads for days)... more amazing places like Langza etc. may not be accessible at all....

Thanks Ghoshal/Friends
I will be visiting with my wife on Jan last week.

1) Could you specifically mention which main places(like Shimla-Sarahan-Kalpa-Tabo-Recong Peo-Kaza-Rampur-Shimla) will be fine for night stay and still don't miss the main beautiful places.
Reach Shimla on 28-Jan >> 2nd Feb on Shimla returned again. Total 6 days.
2) Will gov bus or shared service available ?
3) what is the reserved car cost per days.
4) Some standard Hotel in each places, if possible for you to give.

2) Will gov bus or shared service available ? = upto rekong peo, yes but not after that
3) what is the reserved car cost per days. = it will be quite high during this time . take min 4500 per day
4) Some standard Hotel in each places, if possible for you to give. = only 2-5% of total hotels available will be open during this time so do confirm your accommodation in advance.

I have done Spiti winter in February 2 years back. It was less popular and was just gaining momentum back then. Even in February, it was a deserted area. I did not see many locals in Kaza. Most of them probably stayed indoor. The temperature was dipping below -25. I would like to make few points :

[ If you are going to do this in January you have to remember this is not a FUN trip. Fun comes later. Precautionary measures and preparation for the entire trip - more important]

a) 6 days are not enough. Shimla to Kaza is approx 450 Km. So it is 900 KM up-down. Let's say you are going to make stops in Kalpa, Tabo, Kaza. That's 3 places and if you stay 1 night for Kalpa and Tabo and 3 nights for Kaza - then 5 nights gone here. You have to bear in mind road blocks are pretty common in Mallin nullah, pooh etc. So extra days are needed.

b) It is doable. But ample amount of risks are involved. Winter Spiti is the most amazing adventures that you will ever do. 4W drive is necessary. So you better book it from Shimla. If anything happens in road you will be alone for a long period before help comes so you shouldn't panic. Keep extra food. Always carry ORS and snacks.

c) Thermal wear for -30 degree is a must. In Kaza, you will get plenty of good homestays. Google : Sakya Adobe or Tsherin ji in Spiti. He will take care of everything and he is a lovely guy.

d) If you book a Car ShimatoShimla then it will cost you around 20K-22K. For 6-7 days. With locations included Kalpa/Sangla/Nako/Tabo/Kaza. Shared cabs are much cheaper but finding them in deep winter can be problematic.

e) Day 1 Shimla to Kalpa. // Day 2 Kalpa to Tabo. Stop at Nako before you reach.// Day 3 Tabo to Kaza. Day 4-5 stay in Kaza.// Day 6 return.

f) Don't bargain much with locals if they are keeping you inside. It is not their compulsion but they know if you stay outside you will freeze to death.

Have fun. Don't forget ORS. ;)

Do yourself a favour and don't go beyond Kalpa. With 6 days you have time to enjoy, emphasise enjoy, Shimla, Sarahan and Kalpa but by all means reschedule Spiti for a later time when you have sufficient days in hand to enjoy the splendour there. Suggest 2 weeks for the full loop but do check Kunzum status before booking hotels.

Hello,

We are planning to do spiti valley from Manali in June 2018. Do you have any contacts in Manali who can provide xylo or innova for approx 2800 to 3000 per day. This will help us immensly.

LOWKEY_ Apr 13th, 2018 11:22

the only vehicle in this budget would be Sumo IHMO. Innova easily costs upwards of 4000 per day for this route.

Rates are bit higher for travelling this part of HP mainly because of the stretch between Gramphu and Losar. Practically, no road exists between Batal to Gramphu. Hence, vehicles with lower ground clearance usually gets hit and the charges are higher. I've done it last October though from Shimla side @ Rs.3500/-. Also the rate reduces a bit if the number of booking days increases.
