Is the Kunzum La Pass open in June?

Is the Baralacha La Pass open in June?

We want to travel the loop from Shimla to McLeod Ganj to Keylong over Baralacha La Pass and Kunzum La Pass to Kaza down the Spiti valley back to Shimla via the Hindustan Tibet haghway.

Any information or experience about those passes or roads in June is really helpful.

Thanks!

Hi RSM,

As I am also planning this loop in June 2010, I was trying to get the same information and you would find many information / experience on the same.

Here is what I think:

You don't need to cross Barlacha La (no need to append Pass as 'La' itself means pass) for going to Keylong, if you want to go to Leh from manali via Keylong, you need to cross Barlacha and two more 5000mt pass to do that. But to reach Keylong from the side you mentioned, Barlacha won't come in your way.

You haven't mentioned what time of June you are planning it. If it's early June, Kunzum la is having a probability of still not being open and that entirely depends on weather/snowfall of this season. Normally June 2nd week onwards, Kunzum La is very likely to be open for all kind of vehiclular movement. Opening of Barlacha and Rotang (The one you need to cross to reach Keylong) also depends on weather but usually gets open my end May and as these two passes are strategically located (Connecting Leh with rest of country)even though it gets closed by sudden weather change, it gets reopened quickly by BRO (Border Roads Organization) but Kunzum La don't come in this category and may take little longer to reopen if any unforeseen weather condition make it closed. So plan accordingly.

If you start in June, my suggession would be to do it from other side, from Shimla --Kinnaur -- Spiti -- Lahaul (Keylong) -- Manali -- Shimla. The two major reasons would be to avoid monsoon in Kinnaur part in late June and to avoid risk of pass closure in early june.

Disclaimer: In Himalayan region, it's weather and mother nature that rules, we can merely plan but it can go haywire if mother nature wants that way.

Also keep close eyes on some of the very informative links provided by some very knowledgeable members and keep enough flexibility to replan your trip anytime.

Planning for same deperately

Hey guys,

I am also interested and planning for the same i.e. Shimla - Kinnaur - spiti - Lahaul - manali - solang valley
But following are my concerns:
1) Is that whole doable within max of 10 days or not?
2) Is june end best season to go for?

Thanks for the information. It sounds like June will work for us. Especially with going up Spiti first. We are planning on 4-5 weeks so we should have enough time in our schedual for any pass closures.

Cheers!
