Hi Priyanka,

you couldn't have had a better plan within the number of days you have available at Manali. The Rohtang Pass would open for all of us on the May 16 for sure and this year the snow collection is more than double 5 + feet above Marhi. The snow clearing machines have already reached Rohtang and are organising parking for the thousands of cars that make it to Rohtang every day. The Rohtang Pass is closed on all Teusdays for the Army to work on the road maintenance freely.

Cheers.
Naushad.

Antrek,
are you sure about Rothang pass being open by May 16th? Other day I was speaking to someone in Manali he says Rothang will not open before 25th May.
Anything you know about opening of Kaza-Manali Road? Do you think it will open by first week of June? I am plan a trip with my kids?
Thanks

you can never predict rohtang opening. just keep reading newspaper or www.tribuneidia.com

As far as I know It should be thrown open by 25 may. Rohtang is curently burried under more than 25 feet snow

YES - Dinesh, I am sure that the Rohtang Pass would open on the 16th of May, 2011. The Kaza route from Manali would open on the June 15th. The route from Shimla to Kaza is already operating.

Cheers.

This news brings cheers to my mind since I will be going to Hampta Pass during June beginning and eagerly hoping that the Rohtang Pass will open by that time. Otherwise, will have to spend one additional day. I pray that your forecast comes true !

thanks

Rajat

I┤m sceptical : last year I waited three days in Manali for the Rohtang to be cleared after heavy snowfall ( with one dead from hypothermia) in late October , and the road was out just before I flew out of Leh - around 20th November.
Same time in 2009 fifteen roadworkers died , trying to cross the Rohtang. I could mention other examples over the last decade : no one can tell in advance that the Rohtang is open on any given date , esp. after mid-September.

How is snow on the Rohtang Pass

Icy frozen like glass patches of several meters of about one to three inches thick. Not worth visiting - very dangerous for cars, they could skid and fall hundreds of meters and there could be sudden snowfall of a meter plus and one could get stuck for the night and may be die due to lack of clothing food etc.
