You would be required to come to Chandigarh (A lot of cabs, autos are available at station). You would get buses and cabs from Chandigarh.

No idea about the cost, but it would take around 10 hours to reach Manali from Chandigarh!!

Kalka - Rupanagar (earlier Ropar) - Bilaspur - Mandi - Kullu - Manali. There two ways to do Kalka - Rupanagar (one through Baddi and other through Chandigarh), the latter is very good roads and given the early hours no rush at all (Baddi route not sure about road quality). It will take you around 7-8 hours of driving plus stops given the early hour you are starting.

Shimla route will be longer and more hill drive so not sure it makes sense from a shortest route perspective.

Cost is approx. Rs. 10-14 per km - but you need to pay both ways (it is 325 km from Kalka). If you can manage a good deal, may not have to pay two ways. There should be plenty of buses from Chd.

Hi Rajat,

Thanks a lot for your information.

What will cost me if i take cab on per day basis from kullu?

No idea on a per day basis - usually it is based on amount of travel and hours you keep it. For a small car should be in the Rs. 12-14 per km and for a larger vehicle Rs. 20-25 per km if you go to places like Rohtang - other easier places may be lesser.

Why don't you get down from the train at Chandigarh instead of Kalka then take a bus to Manali??:confused:KK

Dilip - assume you have some work in Ludhiana so need to be there (otherwise how can you reach Ludhiana without crossing Chandigarh? and if you do, why reach Ludhiana and start immediately). I have the following comments:

1. Manali needs minimum 3 days (else too rushed), skip Shimla and do Manali.
2. You are covering two different regions in one trip but not doing either fully. Suggest that you combine Manali with something closer like: Manali - Kullu - Tirthan Valley - Shimla OR Manali - Shimla - Kinnaur. It will save you a lot of travel time and you will see places which are much better than Nainital.

Alternatively you could also drop Manali-Shimla completely and do Kumaon trip instead, i.e. Nainital, Kasauni, Mukteshwar, Munsiyari.

With small kids, try not to do too much road travel and spend more time at the destination. You can look up Manali, Kinnaur and Kumaon threads here for details of various places to visit there.

Hi rajatsurey,

First of all,Thanks a lot for your info.

Actually, before 3 years ago, we went to ludhiana-amritsar-delhousie-manali-ludhiana and at that time we hired a car from ludhiana.

So, i already have seen manali but i am going there only for snow because all 3 child would like to see snow, that's why we are planing to go manali.

Now i am going to ludhiana just because we would like to book that same car from ludhiana, as if we will get same costing from other car owner from chandigarh, then definitely we will not go to ludhiana and directly go to chandigarh.

Also, we would like to book car only for to reach at manali and go to local places around manali and from manali to simla and simla to ambala cantt, because if we will book car for manali side region then we will not have to spend more time to book local vehicles in manali or simla.

hi rajatsurey,

The another reason to go to ludhiana is that we are getting direct train from rajkot to ludhiana.

Dilip - my suggestion is take the train upto Ambala (any train to Ludhiana should pass through Ambala) and then go to Manali from there. You will get taxis from Ambala to Manali directly (by passes Chd). If you know the rate and keep patience, you will get a good bargain - else ask a taxi to come down from Chd / any other place to pick you up (will cost extra for that distance).

This year there is snow everywhere so should not be a problem (btw-which month are you going?). If you have already been to Manali, try adding Kinnaur to the trip (basically, 3 days travel, 3 days in manali and 4-5 days in Kinnaur. You will love it. See trip reports on Kinnaur.

One thing to add - there are interstate permit costs because of which HP registered vehicles may be cheaper for a trip like this - factor that in (though if a Ludhiana based guy gave you good rates - it may not be true). Also, for Amritsar - Dalhousie, Ludhiana is a good base but not for Manali.
