Snowfall blocks 1093 roads in Himachal; CM reviews situation

SHIMLA: Snowfall has blocked about 1093 roads for traffic in Himachal Pradesh out of which 204 roads are likely to be restored by Friday evening. Across the state, 415 water supply schemes have been affected due to the snow. Those which have been adversely affected include 120 water supply schemes in the Mandi district, 60 in Kinnaur district, 89 in Chamba district, five in Kangra, 43 in Kullu and 25 in Rohru circle.
Chief minister Jai Ram Thakur chaired a meeting with the senior officers to review the situation arisen due to heavy snowfall. Shimla, Manali witness heavy snow; roads blocked, power supply disrupted

The higher and mid hills of Himachal Pradesh received heavy snowfall while the lower hills and plains were lashed by heavy rain in last two days.

However, the state woke up to a sunny morning with plentiful snowfall overnight, hampering traffic and snapping of electricity cables.

State capital Shimla, Chamba, Kufri, Narkanda, Dalhousie, Manali, Mandi, Solan, Lahaul-Spiti and Kinnaur received heavy snowfall from Thursday evening to Friday morning.

Dhauladhar ranges receive season’s heaviest snow

Upper reaches of Dhauladhar ranges and Chhota and Bara Bhangal valley on Thursday experienced the heaviest snowfall of the season, while the lower reaches were lashed by heavy rain.
Some parts of Palampur were also hit by hailstorm. The entire Kangra valley is in the grip of a severe cold wave. Bundla, Kandi and other upper areas of Palampur recorded subzero temperature. Snow and rain has disrupted the normal life. The power supply and telecommunication networks have been disrupted while vehicular traffic to snowbound areas has been suspended. HRTC and private operators have discontinued buses to Kothi Kohar and Luhardi following heavy snow at Jhataniri and Multhan. Kullu town gets season’s first snow

Kullu, February 8
Kullu town received the first snowfall of the season on Thursday night. The town received more than 1cm of snowfall, but it was washed away by the accompanying rain.

The entire Kullu valley was in a grip of cold wave following rain in the lower region and snow on the higher reaches. Mattikochhar, Mount Nag, Phungni Devi and Bijli Mahadev mountain peaks experienced fresh snowfall.
Many bus routes were affected due to the snowfall and commuters had to face inconvenience. The vehicular traffic on many link roads had also been disrupted due to snow and rainfall. The Aut-Luhri national highway was blocked again due to snowfall. Lower Dharamsala experiences snow after 6 years

After heavy rain in the past two days, it snowed in some areas of lower Dharamsala on Friday morning. The Kotwali bazaar of Dharamsala received snow after more than six years. The lower areas of Dharamsala had received snow last, in 2012.

While the lower areas of Dharamsala received snow, the upper Dharamsala regions including Bhagsunag, Mcleodganj, Dharamkot received heavy snowfall after many years. All the said areas received up to about 1-ft snow. Even the lower Dhauladhar ranges received heavy snow.

45 stuck in heavy snow, rescued

Forty-five persons stuck in two Reckong Peo-bound buses due to heavy snow have been rescued by the police near Tarapur, an official said on Friday.

After receiving information about the stranded passengers on Saturday, a team of officials from Dhalli police station, under the supervision of the DSP (City), reached the spot to rescue them, Shimla DSP Pramod Shukla said.

The rescue operation continued till 3.30 am on Friday, he said, adding all stuck passengers were taken to safer places in seven government vehicles and their stay was arranged at different hotels in Dhalli and Sanjauli. 9 buried under avalanches rescued
MANALI/SHIMLA: Two avalanches buried nine people in Lahaul and Spiti, stranded hundreds of vehicles and snapped water and power supply lines as the season’s heaviest snowfall overnight in Himachal Pradesh. Snowflakes measuring up to 4cm that started falling in most places after 10pm on Thursday continued till the wee hours of Friday.

While tribal areas of the state received up to 90cm of snow in 24 hours, lower areas like Mandi and Sundernagar too witnessed snowfall after three decades. Himachal to receive more snowfall, rain next week

Shimla, February 10
More snowfall and rain is expected to lash Himachal Pradesh next week, the meteorological department said on Sunday.

The weatherman has forecast snowfall and rain at some places in mid and high hills while thundershowers in low hills and plains from February 12 to 15.

Cloudy skies prevailed in most parts of the state Sunday, with tourist spots Manali and Kufri experiencing biting cold at minus two and minus 0.5 degrees Celsius respectively from 5.30 pm Saturday to 8.30 am on Sunday, he added.

Shimla, February 12
The Meteorological department has issued yellow weather warning for heavy rain and snowfall on February 14 and 15 in Himachal Pradesh, an official said.

The weather department forecast rain and snowfall in the high and mid hills and hailstorm in the low hills and plains of the state from February 13 to 16, Shimla Met centre director Manmohan Singh said.

BRO starts snow-clearing operation in Lahaul-Spiti

The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has started the snow-clearance operation in the tribal district of Lahaul and Spiti on Sunday to connect main roads of the valley with the district headquarters at Keylong.

The BRO has cleared snow up to Satingri from Keylong. A BRO official said that it would take some time to connect Keylong with Sissu and Darcha.

Himachal Pradesh's tourist destination Kalpa and hills overlooking Manali received more snow on Thursday, and the Met Office forecast widespread rain and snow till February 15.

Residents and tourists have been advised not to venture in the high hills owing to avalanche warning by Manali-based Snow and Avalanche Study Establishment.

Tourist resorts of Kufri, Manali, Dalhousie and Kalpa in Himachal Pradesh received moderate snowfall turning them more picturesque on Saturday.

Snow though continued to elude the Himachal Pradesh capital, as the weather office predicted a dry spell after Sunday with the western disturbances likely receding from the region.

More than 302 roads, including Shimla-Chopal, Baghi Khadrala-Sungri-Rohru and Shimla-Ani-Jalori Jot-Aut remained closed in the state on Friday due to fresh spell of snow.

The Met office stated that Kothi received 62 cm of snow, Keylong 25 cm, Khadrala 24, Kalpa 14 cm, Dalhousie 7 cm, Manali 6 cm and Pooh 3 cm.

An intense cold wave gripped most parts of Himachal Pradesh on Monday with the weather office predicting more rain and snow in store.

Shimla, which saw mild rain and snow, recorded a low of 1.7 degrees Celsius, while its neighbouring tourist resort Kufri, which saw 4 cm snow, recorded the night temperature at minus 2.9 degrees.

While tourist spot Narkanda saw good spells of snow, Kasauli and Chail in Solan district received rain.
Kalpa in Kinnaur district saw 7 cm of snow, whereas Manali in Kullu district received 11 mm rain. However, Dalhousie in Chamba got mild snow.

The Met Department has issued the ‘yellow’ weather warning for heavy snowfall, rain, hailstorm and thunderstorm in the state from Monday onwards.

Snowfall and heavy rain may occur at some places in the higher hills and hailstorm/ thunderstorm in the middle, lower hills and plains of the state on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday, the Met said.

The Met issues colour-coded warnings to alert the public ahead of severe or hazardous weather which has the potential to cause “damage, widespread disruption and/or danger to life.” Yellow is the least dangerous among the weather warnings. Shimla, February 19
Due to one ft. of fresh snowfall recorded on Tuesday, the highways connecting the Shimla apple belt— Shimla Kufri Narkanda National Highway, the Theog Hatkoti Rohru and Theog Chopral state highway are blocked.

According to Police officials, the traffic in Shimla is smooth.

Shimla recorded 5 cm of snowfall mainly around Jhakhoo on Monday night. The roads are clear as snow melted quickly because rainfall followed after.
Local Met office reported that Kufri received 35 cm of fresh snowfall. Since, Monday evening HRTC bus services remained suspended beyond Kufri due to snowfall.

Shimla received snow on Tuesday, leading to a surge in tourist footfall as the visitors flocked to enjoy the snow-covered landscape.

“Shimla and its nearby areas have been experiencing snow since early (Tuesday) morning,” an official of the Meteorological Department here told IANS.

Himachal Pradesh is likely to receive moderate to heavy rain and snowfall in the next two days, a weather official said on Wednesday.

Residents and tourists have been advised to avoid travelling to the higher reaches of the hill state.

"There are chances of heavy rain and snowfall at some places in the state till Thursday," Shimla's Meteorological Office Director Manmohan Singh told IANS.
During this period, roads are likely to be hampered especially in Chamba, Kullu, Lahaul-Spiti, Shimla and Kinnaur districts, the weather bureau said.

The apple belt of Shimla and Kinnaur remained cut off from the state capital for the past 24 hours following a fresh spell of snow.

According to the PWD report, 397 roads in Shimla, Mandi and Kangra zones, including Shimla-Kufri-Narkanda-Rampur, Aut-Jalori Pass-Ani-Rampur, Rohru-Hatkoti-Theog and Chopal-Deha-Theog highways, remained blocked for traffic on Tuesday following heavy snowfall.

Tourists thronged the capital after Jhakhu, Kufri and Charabra received fresh snowfall.

A fresh bout of snow in Manali and hailstorm in Shimla and other parts have intensified cold wave conditions in Himachal Pradesh, the Meteorological Department said on Thursday.

Manali in Kullu district received 11 cm of snowfall from 5.30 pm on Wednesday to 8.30 am on Thursday, the MeT office in Shimla said.

Kinnaur’s Kalpa got 14 cm of snow during the period, it added.
Kinnaur’s Pooh received 3 to 4 inches of snowfall on Wednesday night, a district official said.

Tourists throng Shimla as Kufri, Jakhu get fresh snow

In the wake of fresh snowfall in Jakhu, Kufri and Charabra, a large number of tourists on Wednesday thronged the capital city.

However, fresh snowfall brought normal life to a halt in the upper Shimla area, Kinnaur, Lahaul-Spiti, Pangi, Bharmour, Dalhousie and upper parts of Kullu and Mandi districts.

While 225 roads, including 105 roads in Rampur, Rohru, Chopal and Kinnaur, remained closed to traffic for the last two days due to the snowfall, the weather forecast of widespread snow and hailstorms from tomorrow for two days is likely to hit the restoration work.

SHIMLA: A spectacular video captured in Himachal Pradesh's Kullu district showed a goods vehicle falling into a deep gorge. Fortunately, nobody was present in the vehicle.

The higher reaches of the state are reeling under cold weather conditions due to snowfall and rains in many parts. The weather conditions have adversely affected the vehicular movement in the hill state.

Intense cold continued to grip Himachal Pradesh on Friday with higher reaches experiencing more rain and snow, the weather office said.

The Meteorological office here said the chill would extend over the weekend as snow and thundershowers would continue in the state till Saturday.

There seems no end to the woes of the people of tribal district Lahaul and Spiti anytime soon as the district received heavy snowfall on Thursday.

The district headquarters at Keylong had received over 30 cm snowfall till filing of the report, while other parts of the district witnessed over 90 cm snow, snapping the power supply and telecommunication services in the region.

The entire district was reeling under darkness since Wednesday evening as heavy snowfall did considerable damage to the power lines. The telecommunication service remained snapped completely for more than 12 hours. Avalanche sweeps away 5 vehicles in Kaza village

Mandi, February 22
A snow avalanche that hit the tribal district of Lahaul and Spiti on Friday swept away five vehicles near Thami Nullah in Pangmo village near Kaza.

Besides, the roof of Chomo Gompa and a forest guard’s hut also got damaged in the region. Another avalanche was reported at Kakri Nullah near Kaza, but no loss of life was reported.

Due to heavy snowfall in the region on Thursday, the roof of the Food Corporation of India (FCI)’s foodgrain store at Karga village near Keylong got collapsed. Landslides wreak havoc in Kullu, Manali

Manali: Glacier slides, heavy rain and snowfall continue to wreak havoc in Kullu and Manali areas of Himachal Pradesh. Almost all major and link roads, including Kullu-Manali national highway have been blocked with landslides and hundreds of trees uprooted. For the second day, there was no phone or internet access in many places on Friday.
A massive avalanche near Nehru Kund, about 7km from here, has blocked Manali-Solang highway while dozens of landslides along the Kullu-Manali highway have blocked the Manali-Chandigarh NH at multiple places since Thursday evening. Kullu-Manali bypass road was also blocked following landslides and uprooting of trees. However, it was cleared for vehicular movement by noon. All the link roads connecting hundreds of villages have suffered damages following landslides.

Landslides and fallen trees have damaged power transmission lines at various places, plunging a large number of villages into darkness. Even Manali township plunged into darkness after power supply lines snapped. The town and nearby villages have had no telephone and internet connectivity since Wednesday night. Although, connectivity was partially restored by private operators in some areas, BSNL network remains completely dead.

It has also predicted rain in the region from February 23 to March 1.Kothi and Kalpa received 3 cm and 1 cm of snow, while Manali received 6 mm of rain, followed by Jhandutta 5 mm, Bhuntar 4 mm, Jubbal 3 mm and Kotkhai 2 mm. Himachal Pradesh is bracing for more snow as a cold wave continued to lash the state on Monday, the weather office said.

The western disturbances--storm systems originating from Caspian Sea and moving across the Afghanistan-Pakistan region--would be active again in the region till February 27 and thereafter on March 1-2, an official at the India Meteorological Department told IANS.

Kullu villages cut off after heavy snowfall

MANALI: Several villages in Kullu district were cut off from rest of the region with heavy snowfall and landslides damaging many connecting roads resulting in large number of vehicles being stranded.

Several roads in the region have suffered damage due to heavy snowfall in the last few days. The District administration, however, has managed to restore traffic on some routes.

"Nearly 50 vehicles are stranded in Bran and Dobha villages. A large chunk of road has collapsed and nearly a hundred car-sized boulders have blocked the road. It will take at least two weeks to open the road," a resident of Bran village Rakesh Sharma said. While many vehicles have buried deep under snow in Kothi, Majhach and Solang areas, road connectivity in many high altitude villages in Banjar region is still to be restored. Work is on to clear snow from Banjar-Anni highway.

50, including foreigners, stranded in Spiti valley

MANALI: As many as 50 tourists including foreigners are stranded at different places in Spiti valley of Himachal Pradesh after series of avalanches and heavy snowfall.

Rescue and traffic restoration work had been carried out on a war footing despite continuing snowfall hampering the work. However, officials said that tourists were safe in guesthouses and homestays. Amongst the stranded tourists are an Australian couple who have managed to reach Tabo village of Spiti and had left for Kinnaur on Sunday. Administrative officials informed it might take a couple of more days for the roads to get operational and clear the snow and evacuate tourists.

“We have removed debris of seven avalanches and now we are working on avalanche number 10,” Spiti sub-divisional magistrate at Kaza Jeewan Singh Negi said. He added that 30 tourists are at Kaza and Shego. “A German lady Maria is also at Shego village. Some tourists including three to five foreigners are at Kibber village. They were on snow leopard tour.
