hi - i am looking at going to India in April and May and even though I had planned to go to to Rajasthan then, everyone suggested to head to the hill stations....only I dont even have hiking shoes and am not a trekker. Is there anything to do outside of trekking at all these hill stations? What is there to see and do at these hill stations? any info greatly appreciated!

Get up in the morning, have a nice cup of tea sitting outside enjoying the sun. Have breakfast and chat around. Then have lunch, take a brief nap if you will. Repeat the tea cycle...go for a short walk. In the evenings, light a bonfire and have drinks. Watch some TV if available. A perfect recipe for getting bored for many but an extremely pleasurable thing for a lazy bum like me...

I totally agree.. Perfect for people who just want to laze around.. I love talking walks in the late evening at hill stations with cool breeze...

What to see? - THE MOUNTAINS ! THOSE FANTASTIC MOUNTAINS ! Higher than anywhere in Japan and in fact higher than in most places on earth.

What to do? - Admire the mountains.

Mountains for Original Scenic beauty lovers

Hi,

If any one is a original scenic beauty lover or a nature lover then i think no place is better than the hilly areas.
Look at the following places:
a) Leh-Ladaakh
b) Gulmarg, Sonmarg, pahalgaon: in Kashmir
c) AULI: in Uttraakhand
d) Himachal
e) Kumaon
etc

Enjoy the majesty of the mountains and beautiful hillsides any way you like. I am a trekker but you needn't be one to appreciate the natural beauty there.

There are a lot of things to do apart from trekking I suppose. What about paragliding, skiing etc? The opportunities are so diverse in India, it is a bit difficult to describe in an online forum fully. The festivals etc. may also vary according to the region one is visiting.

Architecture: Nothing spectacular but you may come across a few pieces of old British time Architecture at a few places (I could be missing out something important here)e.

Markets: Yes. Every major hill station has a big market wherein you can gt a lot of touristy things as well great food (depending on the place).

People shots: Yes please. Unless you go somewhere too remote, you'll always get very interesting people shots.

Religious events/ festivals: Wherever you go in India, you are never far from these. If you are close to people, you will see celebrations for something or the other. A lot of info on what is happening where, can be had from the internet.

All I can say is that don't look at things too objectively. Don't plan on 'things there are to do'. Enjoy the travel and then it won't matter whether it is hills or the plains. Just be open to experience something different.

As for 2 months, it is entirely possible that they may prove to be too less for the hills.

There's tons of temples, churches, Old Victorian architechture. Temples like Badrinath, Kedarnath etc. are famous pilgrimage temples in awesome settings. But probably don't open until late may as their high up in the mountains. People shots are everywhere in India. You can do a google for festivals. Not sure about them.

But my reason I like the mountains in India the most is the serene beauty and peaceful bliss I feel when up there. Definitely a big change from the hectic chaos of the rest of India.

And there's places up there that attract alot of other travelers so you can always go there and make friends and you won't be bored. And maybe find someone to travel with.

But I think you can do Rajasthan in most of April, though it will be hot and then head up north.

Typical hill stations like shimla, nainital, mahabaleshwar are "whatever" for me, there is nothing exciting in the mall roads except the food. But once you go away from the crowds in to the woods you are in some other world.Even in HP the crowded kullu valley has a lot to offer to the peace seeking traveller that too in the peak season.

Anybody who asks that question in the context of the small 'hill stations', at least, is not mentally ready to go there.

Try the bigger ones- Nainital, Mussoorie, Shimla and such, would be my advice.

Nothing to really do in the hills except read and sleep - specially if you are not a trekker or a nature lover or not very physically active or interested in the local customs and living.
