Hi Experts,

My husband and I will be travelling to Kinnaur - Spiti Valley this year from end of Sept to Oct first week. We have planned the below itinerary -

28/09 - Late night flight from Hyderabad to Delhi

29/09 -Bus from Delhi to Shimla. Overnight stay at Shimla

30/09 - Start from Shimla to Rakcham early in the morning by 8AM via Sarahan. Visit Hatu Peak at Narkanda, Srikhanda peak and Bhima Kali Temple enroute. Overnight at Rakcham.

01/10 - Start for Chitkul early after breakfast. Spend some time there and on the banks of river Baspa. Come back to Rakcham and start for Kalpa by 12PM. Visit Roghi and Chini village on the way. Overnight at Kalpa.

02/10 - Kalpa to Tabo via Nako Lake. On the way also want to visit GUE village Mummy. Overnight at Tabo.

03/10- Tabo to Kaza via Dhankar Monastry. Check in to a hotel in Kaza and then visit Key Monastry, Langza and Komic village, skipping Kibber.

04/10 - Start from Kaza to Manali via Kunzum and Rohtang Pass. On the way visit the Chandratal Lake. Stay at Manali.

05/10 - Start from Manali to Delhi in HRTC Volvo bus.

06/10 - Train from Delhi to Hyderabad.

Now my questions are -

We have a tight schedule hence extending any more day to this trip will not be possible. Keeping that in mind does this itinerary seem fine to you'll? Are any alterations needed?

I am planning to do this travel with driver Ramchandra's agency. Any suggestion on that.

For hotels, do we pre-book it or do on spot booking. Which would be good?

Regards,
Suhanii

30/9 seems to much rushed. Shimla to Sarahan itself would be around 7 hours journey, so if you plan to trek to Hatu peak then I think you would be able to make it so Sarahan.
4/10 seems to be very difficult if not impossible.

My suggestion just stick to Kinnaur region.

Though a bit rushing sort of but the plan is executable. Suggestions - Pre booking accommodation is not necessary for better deal and proper winter gears are absolutely necessary to combat biting cold at Chandrataal camp with proper acclimatization steps to be followed on the day you start from Kalpa.

Any specific reasons for staying in delhi on the first day? A night bus can easily take you to chandigarh and beyond.

We also wanted a late night bus to Chandigarh. But the problem is that we are taking a night flight from Hyderabad and reaching Delhi at 11:30PM. Then from the airport we have to reach Delhi ISBT Kashmiri Gate which would take another hour or more. As per the website I see that the last bus from Delhi to Chandigarh is at 23:30.So, I suppose the bus option will not be possible for us. Please correct me if I am wrong.

Still very rushed. For example, on the day you're going from Kalpa to Tabo via nako, you are descending to Reckong Peo (about 1000 mtr descent), then ascending to nako (it's higher than Tabo, check the map), and then again to Tabo. So, just going by distance on google map wont make sense.

Similarly, on the day you're going from Rakcham to Chitkul, you're then planning on backtracking to Peo and ascending to Kalpa. Chitkul to Kalpa can take anything between 4-6 hours one way, and to top that you'd do sightseeing as well. I spent 1.5 days in Kalpa on the way to Spiti and then another 1.5 on the way back.

If i had 9 days including travel time from another city (not Delhi), I'd limit myself to either the Kinnaur side - i.e. Sarahan, Kalpa, Chitkul, Rakcham, Sangla, etc. OR do the Spiti circuit via manali. There's enough in each circuit to fill up the time. Take a look at my report (in signature) for some idea and drop a few places.
