Forest rest houses are run by the forest department ; in some cases by the administration of special 'projects' for the area, eg Project Tiger runs some.

In prominent tourist locations, it may be possible sometimes to book these at the location itself.
Otherwise, prior bookings are required, often from a big city miles away.

If you intend to use these, you need to identify which and make bookings accordingly. Information will be available online as to whom to contact; but don't depend on email replies from them.

Keep in mind that in many places, weekends and holidays are 'peak season' and these places are popular... often these are the only places allowed to have accomodation within a protected forest. So, much more than a hotel, book in advance.

You will probably have to arrange these from Shimla, we don't see him here these days but Dhananjay would be a good person to contact, he's really clued up on this area. Try sending him a PM he & his family run the Parkview cafe in Shimla. KK

You can book the forest rest houses in any of the district headquarters at the district forest officer's office.
