Except of the hotel restaurants and dabbas on the Ram Bazar I found the selection in the upper segment not that great compared to Manali. There are 2-3 good restaurants on the Kali Bari Road approximately at the level of the Telegaph Office but they are hidden on the second foor, thus it is not easy to recognise them at a first glance.

Some of my favorites

I enjoyed these restaurants:

Devicos - this is an old classic bar - has addl. dining room upstairs
Fascination - 26 The Mall (upstairs) Indian and Chinese, some continental.
Indian Coffee House - old classic, good coffee, good for breakfast
Alfa - on the Mall -- good lunches
Seventh Heaven Restaurant in Hotel Combermiere - I especially enjoyed this place for dinner

Journey far.....
Walk in Peace.

Ashiana which is run by Himachal Tourism wasn't bad.

Also there was another place which is a hotel and restaurant and I forgot the name but its the one with the lift and stuff. Maybe someone else knows. They had great dessert.

Hello

Hehehehe ... I am a cafe owner in Shimla and I wont say anything about my pad .. Its being renovated these days .. however I would say some dining experience iN shimla not be missed ...

Cholla Bhatura --- Sitaram in Lakkar bazaar (Open only till about 3 PM)

Pastry and Patties (Trishool Bakery on the Mall)

Coffee & Ambience and Local Culture Gossip --- Coffee House on the Mall

Chinese --- aunty's in Middle Bazaar ... and Dimsum on the Mall is good too

Tea and Gossip with regular Punjabi fare - Baljees ... GREAT FOR ITS PIPING HOT GULAB JAMUNS

Absolutely Great Non Vegetarian couple with a few Drinks - La Glace Bar and Restaurant on the ridge

GREAT CHEESE TOMATO - Splash on the ridge

Himachali fare - The restaurant at Hotel Holiday Home

Trout Fish - Spar's Lodge, Chaura Maidan Shimla

Then we have regular chracterless .. Cafe Coffee Day, Barista, Sagar Ratna ... The food is what you get everywhere and the coffee is what you get everywhere ... there is no local flavour and no personal sustenance ...

Good places to relax and drink -- My cafe is the best (hehehehe) I hope the Admins dont take me off

Embassy is good and then so is Fascination though it can be a bit crowded sometimes.

Regards,
Dhananjay

Baljee is good....

I remember eating chocolate coated walnuts from a small bakery shop opposite Baljees.

And Dhananjay, next tme I am there, I'll be visiting Park Cafe to verify your claim.
I did not fully understand the dread term "Terminal Illness" until I saw Terminal 1 D of Delhi Airport.

Am fairly certain you mean the Seventh Heaven Restaurant in the Hotel Combermiere. You take a lift down from the mall level to the restaurant. And you are right -- their desserts are great!
