Dharamshala - Himachal Pradesh

For anyone visiting Dharamshala HP we have the following information having been there at the end of October, beginning of November. We stayed just outside Dharamshala town at Mahindra Kangra Valley. Plenty of excursions were possible, either 'standard' ones or to destinations we wanted (you can get 'templed out' if you only do the planned tours!). The best way we found was to hire a taxi, agree the fare beforehand and get to know your driver! We visited McLeodganj twice and loved the place! We are not in our youth, so what we did below may not suit all, we loved our time there,
A guide from the hotel took us on a trek through the nearby tea gardens and up the river. We later used this as a basis for our independent exploration further up the valley.
The one thing we did get wrong was our clothing. We'd expected it to be getting cool, but in fact the temperatures in the day were in the mid to high 20s, then went cool at night. The cold weather was expected on 15th November we were told!
Places worth visiting:
McLeodganj - the town itself, the Dali Lama's temple, Tibetan Museum, St John's church, the Naddi view point, the Bhagsu waterfall. All popular tourist destinations, but not crowded when we were there.
Other places worth visiting are the Rock Temple at Masroor, Kangra Fort, Gyuto Monastery and perhaps Norbulingka Tibetan Institute if you have money to spend.
We found the locals very helpful and friendly, very proud of their heritage (both Tibetan and Hindu). ATMs not always obvious, so take cash, especially for the markets, but there is a Thomas Cook exchange in McLeodganj.

In 2012 we had stayed in Exotica resort at dharamshala. Tarrif was rs.3500/- for two in twin sharing room with MAP(bf and one meal) incusive of all taxes. Really nice place, away from town on a hillock. Rooms constructed with tent and concrete. Food was good. Swimming pool was not very good although.
