You should stay at Mcleodganj or Bhagsu or Dharamkot......

The places to see are:

St. John's Church
Tsuglag Khang (Dalai Lama's Temple Complex)
Tibet Museum
Norbulingka Institute
Dal Lake
Triund
The Library of Tibetan Works and Archives
Tushita Meditation Centre
The Tibetan Institute for the Performing Arts (TIPA)
Bhagsunath Temple
Bhagsu Waterfall
Dharamkot
Namgyalma Stupa
Dip Tse-Chok Ling Gompa
The Tibetan Childrenís Village
I did not fully understand the dread term "Terminal Illness" until I saw Terminal 1 D of Delhi Airport.

Yes all of these places are close

McLeodganj is the real Tibetan Settlement - somwhat crowded
Bhagsu & Dharamkot are upper part of Mcleodganj....

Mcleodganj is a foodies paradise, some good eateries are Carpe Diem, McLLO, Tibet, Jimmy's Italian, Lhamo's Croissant....

There are many more.........

Hotel Tibet serves really good Tibetan and Chinese food. It could be a good choice for New Years Eve dinner.
Have you decided where to stay yet? There are lots of good options.

Smile 2 Days in McLeodganj

2 days is not very long and there is a lot to see and do, I lived there for 5 months last winter and still didn't do everything. Some good places to stay (I'm Female and very picky)Check out Green Hotel on Bahgsu Rd, just down from the bus station, or Hotel Tibet also on Bahgsu Rd. Both are very centrally located and easy to access. There is also the Asian Plaza a little more upscale, but probably no nicer than the other two. Also Chonor House is a treat if you have been traveling long, great rooms, comfy, clean, quiet and great restaurant, my favorite! Also it's located near the Tibetan Temple 'Tsuglagkhang' which you must see while there.
Also if any performances are happening at TIPA, go for sure. The waterfall at Bahgsu while a nice walk will most likely not have a lot of water in December and so a bit disappointing. The best thing about McLeod is just hanging out with the Tibetan diaspora, they are great people and will treat you right if you give them half a chance. Eat lots of momos and Thentuk!! Yum Yum! Oh and Bean internet cafe/coffee rocks the house!!

Gakyi restaurant is a haven for westerners, serving Tibetan food mostly but with a few other items, like brown rice tofu & veggies, or curd with fruit and muesli, ht eTibetan woman who owns it is a stern sweetheart and runs a tight ship. Lhasa restaurant is also great for Tibetan food. Lhamo's croissant also on Bahgsu road is a chill place any time of day, good reliable food and shows free documentaries on Tibet every night of the week. Triund will take a full day, so not a great choice for a 2 day stay, plus it is a steep climb! Norbulingka is a must for any visitor to the area, spend the afternoon poking around the temple, the doll museum and the fabulous gift shop filled with the best examples of Tibetan handicrafts I've seen anywhere ever! Bring lots of money though cuz it's pricey, but worth it.

As a side suggestion...don't bother with the train to Pathenkot, the bus from Delhi or Majnu Katilla is easier and drops you off right in the center of Mcleod at the bus station. The train takes you out of the way and then you have to spend more time in a taxi. The bus is an overnighter leaving around 6p.m. and arriving in McLeodgnaj around 6 a.m. about 500 rupees.

Good luck and have fun wandering the streets of McLeodganj! You definitely can't get lost.

I have gone there 4 times now but never in a train .. Though buses run from Majnu ka Tila .. I have always preferred the Himachal Tourism buses. Take the Volvo if you can .. it is much more suited for a night's journey, and since there are no openable windows in it, it doesn't get too windy in there. Cost used to be Rs. 800 or so, earlier this year when I went.

McLeod Ganj is an awesome place for food .. two days are simply not enough ... at least plan a 4-5 days trip ..
And nobody mentioned my favorite place .. JJI's cafe on Bhagsu Road (in McLeod). Try the farmer's breakfast and Honey-lemon-ginger tea there. Then there are the Chocolate Log (Jogibara road), Nick's Italian Kitchen and loads more. And supposedly the best Pizza ever ... at the pizzeria in Dharamkot where they cook in wooden ovens.

I don't know about December, but I went in January once and a lot of places were closed then. Especially Bhagsu was largely closed.

Pema thang has nice rooms .. but it is a bit on the expensive side (Rs. 800 - 1000). I mean there are so many cheaper ones available. But if you are willing to spend that much, then Pema Thang is a good option. It has a nice restaurant as well.

McLeod Ganj is unlike all the other hill stations. It is not about visiting the important/ touristy places there. Spend time just hanging in the streets of McLeod ... I have never felt more at peace doing anything else ...

Triund in December .. I dunno .. it could have some snow .. Triund is best visited in October I think ..

And don't try to wrap it up in 2 days ...

If your there for Tuesday go to LIT's momo and talks with former Tibetan political prisoners. They have amazing chocolate momos! If Friday, go to there Movie and Pizza night. Both are only 100 rupees and are all you can eat!

There are loads of places that charge lower than 600 per night. McLeod is a very cheap hill station, and an awesome one at that (the best .. imo). Infact, the first time I went there, we were in college and had small budgets. We made the whole 4-5 day trip (from college to McLeod and back) in about 1,600 rupees per person (everything included).

I'll suggest you go to McLeod Ganj and search for a hotel there. Any hotel you pre-book will be costlier. Just check that there is no Dalai Lama event .. otherwise a lot of places may be full. You can also look for hotels in Bhagsu, which may be a shade cheaper. Check out the wikitravel page here for a lot more info

We from 20-24th December stayed in Prema Thang where after a bit bargaining we got really well rooms @675 per day. you can try there.as it's an off season you will easily get a lot of concession.
