Alright geezers, wondering about said taxi from Amristar. Would it be best to get a train to Pathankot and then a taxi on towards Dharamsala? time is an issue here. Any movers and shakers in Amristar on the 19th of June and fancy sharing a cab north? peace

The GOLDEN TEMPLE is a MUST. I have been to Amristar twice and suggest this route.

Day train from Delhi to Amristar with views of green fertile fields of
the Punjab and villages.

Overnight in Amristar with visit to Golden Temple by daylight and also at night when its spectacular with lighting of the entire area.

Taxi next day to Dharamsalah through the Punjab on quite good roads until the road begins its ascent to Dharamsalah and McLeod Ganj, with its views of "The Abode of the Gods"

On one trip, I did the reverse, leaving Dharamsalah in the early morning, arriving in Amristar early afternoon, overnight, then train to Delhi. My taxi cost about 50USD in a safe car with driver from a travel agency, who was an experienced mountain driver,

I plan to return to Mcleod Ganj and will train from Delhi to Amristar, then taxi to the Himalayas as this area of India is really lovely.

Hi MaryLouise, I am going on a honeymoon trip to Himalayas, and plan to travel from Shimla to Manali to Dharamshala to Amritsar to Delhi. I am looking for a experienced and decently priced taxi service for 5 days which can take us to Manali from Shimla and then going forward. Can you tell me which taxi service you took and from where did you book it? 50 USD (~ Rs. 2200) sounds reasonable from D'shala to Amritsar.. was this a sharing taxi? And if I may ask, what car was it? I plan to hire a Tavera/Innova as we are 4 people (2 couples) on our honeymoons.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Rahul (from Paris!) I booked entire trip, train, car, driver, hotels with Cox & King Travel, Delhi. An English firm with its entire staff, Indian, so I felt they were really knowledgeable about my destination. From my travel experiences I knew booking through a large firm gave me more opportunity to hire a reliable car/driver with assistance available if needed on the road. I had a small car, small back seat, enough for 2 medium size people with a small trunk for luggage. I did see other very large vehicles that had space for 4 people plus luggage/driver in McLeod Ganj going to Amristar. I suggest packing a lunch, snacks, cold drinks as there are limited restaurants on the route. Your destination is perfectly lovely for a Honeymoon with the opportunity to take many photos of the "Abode of the Gods" Marylouise

Hi Richard There are several daily buses Amristar to Pathankot then to Mcleod Ganj. After Pathankot, by bus, there are nail biting narrow rutted roads, twists, turns, oncoming trucks, buses. At the RR station in Pathankot there are taxis to McLeod Ganj that may offer shared cost between travellers. The taxi offers better views of the Himalayas with skilled mountain drivers.Bring snacks, sandwich, water from Amristar for the road trip. I did not stay at Golden Temple to sleep but travellers are warmly welcomed and its a unique experience that I will have on my next trip to Golden Temple. Meals of excellent taste and quality are offered free of charge with an interesting group of other travellers. The beauty and tranquility of the Golden Temple complex is awesome and is an excellent introduction to North India. Marylouise
