Hello,

We (myself and my OH) are currently in Goa (just outside mandrem) and my OH is unwell. It started 5 1/2 days ago;
Last Fridayat around 00.30 she wakes me up to say she is feeling really rather rough and goes to the loo. She has the runs, she goes back and forth a few times. She then tells me she has had it since the afternoon before (Thursday) and took two Imodium for it.
Around 1 am she is sick twice but no more. I start tracking her to which rises up to around 38.6 but responds to paracetamol and falls back to 38.2 (500mg). The fever breaks around 10.30 the next morning.
She continues to have the runs and takes another Imodium (unknown to me). After around 48 hours the runs stop (no more vomiting either). So we think we are in the clear.
I should also mention she has CFS/ME so recovery is longer for her.
We move on our schedule to the next place (which is better as we were in a hostel and move to a place with private rooms).
The following day (Monday) in the evening she has a sudden bout of vomiting again (one bout lasting around 20 mins) and then she tells me she has had the runs for about 12 hours and she took another Imodium!
I tell her to stop taking the damned Imodium (she hates being ill but doesn't understand taking Imodium was covering the symptom not the illness). Since then she has had the runs til now, no fever or further vomiting.

Yesterday I asked for a Dr to come see her, I was told I would have to go talk to a Dr to get him to come out. So I went to do that, the Dr did not want to come out and instead have me a script and some pills that look like activated charcoal (black, around 1cm across), some rinifol and some sugar pills that I swear are homeopathic in nature.
On the script I got some enerzal and some bilagyl syrup.
I did note the Dr had a BAMS after his name which I didn't recognise.

My questions are simply; should we continue with what we were told or seek more medical advice?

We are due to move to mapusa today as well.

Lastly I should say we took all the normal precautions but only had 2 weeks to prepare as was a short notice holiday. We got hep a, typhoid, tetanus, polio all sorted but no hep b or anti malaria things. We have been sleeping under a mozzy net and our room has always had a "good knight" liquid plugin running (I brought one to ensure it). We both only drink bottled water and use alcohol anti-bacterial hand gel religiously.

Imodium is used to treat and control diarrhea, including traveler's diarrhea.

The doctor (Dr), you consulted, is qualified as BAMS (to treat in Ayurveda).

But, is she taking appropriate fluid and electrolyte replacement?

If your OH is having serious tummy problems for last 5 days - please consult an MBBS doctor immediately.
MBBS is the minimum. Most good doctors will also have an MD.
(MBBS means the same as in England and MD is the masters degree in medicine).

If there is a stomach infection ( chances are there is) then a course of antibiotics would be required. Please consult a doctor immediately.

You may ask manager of the hotel to help you in finding a MBBS/MD.

If you are in Mapusa then this seems to be a good place -
http://www.justdial.com/GOA/Mapusa-C...2STD2393_BZDET

The phone numbers are -
+(91)-9422062336
+(91)-832-2263343/2263346
Call them up and ask when there a doctor will be available for general medicine. Get an appointment if possible on the phone. You should get one today itself or tomorrow morning at the latest.

Take a taxi and go there with your OH. Before starting from your hotel call once more to make sure that the doctor is going to be there.

You can also ask your hotel for other recommendations of good doctors and clinics.

I'm very reluctant to get into any kind of medical advice, especially as it seems quite clear that there is an infection. I also strongly recommend going to a doctor or hospital asap. Once there, ask the doctor if ENTEROQUINOL can be taken - it's a good and safe tablet for diaorrhea. 2 in the morning, 2 at night will generally ensure great improvement on Day 1 itself, 2 more next morning and usually the diarrhoea is gone. If required, take another dose - one has to be careful though because too many doses will ensure no bowel movement of any kind for a day or two.

Imodium is NOT a good drug for fixing diarrhoea, only stopping it for as long as one's using the drug.

Quick update managed to get hold of an orthopaedic surgeon of all things, following his advice to the letter (basically thinking its travellers diarrhoea likely e-coli).
Also sort advice from a trained pharmacist in the UK (lived with a few).

Currently she is taking Imodium as directed (to keep it under control) and keeping fluids and electrolytes up.
Found that the EnerzaL (Orange) drinks also help a lot with her ME.
If it persists Phil tomorrow been told to get Metrogyl 400mg twice a day for 3 days.
If it still isn't better we will be in the UK and will go to our GP.
Thanks for the advice on here!
