Hi All,

I'll be moving to New Delhi from London in August for 8-9 months.

My boyfriend got a job there - he has a business visa - and I have a long term (up to 1 year) tourist visa. I'm currently looking into getting a private medical insurance for the time I'm there.

Can I get private medical insurance in India with an Indian private insurance provider/hospital?

I want something which covers the basics as well, not only emergency.

Is it possible to do this while on a long-term tourist visa?

Thank you in advance!

Health insurance in India is sold by insurance companies, not hospitals. It is not necessary to be Indian to purchase health insurance from an Indian company. The IRDA guidelines do not distinguish between Indians and foreigners. Policies are issued for a minimum period of one year, nothing shorter is available. Also pre-existing ailments are not covered nor are claims within 30 days of policy issue. Complete list of exclusions here - http://www.policyholder.gov.in/What_...ce_to_Buy.aspx

I do not know if you can do this on tourist visa but it should be possible.

In India, there are lots of companies who will offer you Health Insurance, and from my last visit to India talking to an SBI insurance representative, you can take out health insurance when on long visit to India. From my understanding, one thing you may require is an Indian bank account.
Idle mind is a Devil's workshop.

Usually most multinational companies have group health insurance for their employees and immediate family. I am not sure if you could be covered as you are not yet married. You can ask your boyfriend to check with his company.
