How to mix Water in Wine and make it more safe.

While tradition says it is straight bottle drink like Beer.
But I was reading about older tradition of Romans, pre Christian era, who will never drink wine without adding water to it. Even holy wine served in Church by Father is mix of red wine and water.

Ancient Romans and some others too, will mix one part wine with two part water. Those not mixing water in wine were called Alcoholics.

Nowdays also some pepole are doing it and are reporting wonderful results in taste, particularly Red wine. It also helps in diluting instant intoxication properties of strong wines.
Plus, I also read about modren wines coming with premixed water, in processing.

What do experts say, mix water and ice in Wine (red) or not.
If yes, what ratio.

In the past, city water was not safe to drink in the UK, due to bacteria. Most of the population drank a very weak beer, as the brewing process killed the germs.
This drink was known as small beer, which nowadays is an expression for something without much influence.
Providing the water is clean to start with, I can imagine many happy evenings trying to judge the best (tiny) quantity of water to wine... :D

Indeed, one original reason for drinking wine was that water could kill you. Reportedly, Alexander the Great may have been felled by toxic wine or by liver disease (he and his army mostly drank wine, but I am not sure if they diluted it).

Presumably, mixing wine with bad water creates a sterile mixture as long as you don't use too much bad water.

I'm dubious, as ever.

Science please? I doubt that adding a small amount of wine to water would sterilise it. If the bugs present can stand the acid in your stomach then surely they can stand very dilute alcohol?

I am 99% sure that adding wine to bad water would not sterilize the water... Maybe the original poster was thinking that adding clean water, to having weaker wine, would be "safer" in not making you too merry?

Yes my original Idia was to dilute wine, and make it more safe, like 2/3 RO water in 1/3 wine, will bring down the Alcohol content in mixture to 5 percent. Now if taste is not compromised, it should be like drinking mild beer.

Making alcohol more watered down does not make it "safer. "

Beer is not safer than wine is not safer than spirit. All that the additional water changes is the total volume of fluid that has to be swallowed to consume the same amount of alcohol. It's the same alcohol.

and if you're using good wine it's a crime to dilute it.

water is not going to change the alcohol content. as nick said, you're just adding more liquid to a liquid. what's the point?

Looks to me like the conclusion, whichever way you look at it (spoiling the wine or adding more poison to the water) is...

Bad idea!
