If you get bitten it doesn't necessarily mean you're going to get rabies. I've been bitten twice, but that was years ago when dogs were more spooked by foreigners than they are now. Chances are that unless you're living very rural you'll never ever see a rabid dog, It'll have been beaten to death by the villagers at the first signs.
Most people who are bitten are bitten because they've startled the dog, Let them know that you are coming, especially at night, shuffle your feet whilst walking, cough or rattle something, then you won't startle them,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

There have been cases of people contracting vCJD from infected bovine stock, but it may depend where the vaccine originated from. (the case I know of was in the UK and was contracted from bovine growth hormone rather than a rabies vaccine)
