Tour report

PROLOGUE

My parents, younger brother and I were the four in the group in our tour to Gujarat during the period from 22.10.2013 to 02.11.2013. The places chosen for this trip were mainly due to the inspiration from “Khusboo Gujarat Ki”, a TV advertisement by megastar Amitabh Bachchan on Gujarat Tourism endorsing the vibrant state.

It took us about 3 – 4 months to gather all information, mapping our route, plan the whole trip, book hotels/guest houses etc.

The program, as chalked out initially, was:

Day 1: 22-10-13 : Departure from Howrah by 12906 Hwh-Porbandar/Okha Express at 10.55 p.m for Ahmedabad.

Day 2: 23-10-13 : Train

Day 3: 24-10-13 : Reach Ahmedabad at 08.55 a.m. Have our lunch. Local sightseeing in Ahmedabad visiting Sabarmati Ashram, Hathee Singh Jain Temple, Calico Museum of Textiles, Kankaria Lake etc etc.

Day 4: 25-10-13 : Visit Akshardham Temple and others on the way to Gandhinagar. Drive to Patan. Afternoon reach Patan. Visit the Rani Ki Bhav Sahastralinga Talav. Then Drive to Modhera. Visit Sun Temple. Drive back to Ahmedabad.

Day 5: 26-10-13 : Drive to Lothal and Nalsarobar with sightseeing in the enroute spots. Back to Ahmedabad to catch the train 19221 Somnath Express to Veraval at 10.00 p.m.

Day 6: 27-10-13 : Arrive Veraval at 06.25 a.m. Transfer to Somnath by autorickshaw. Somnath Jyotirlinga Darshan and local sightseeing by autorickshaw or bus operated by Somnath Trust, as per availability.

Day 7: 28-10-13 : Tour to Diu. Return to Somnath to catch the train 19251 Dwarka Express to Dwarka at 11.00 p.m.

Day 8: 29-10-13 : Arrive Dwarka at 07.00 a.m. Dwarka Temple Darshan and city tour by local autorickshaw.

Day 9: 30-10-13 : Sightseeing Bhet Dwarka and Nageswar Temple by bus operated by Dwarka Municipal Corporation, as per availability.

Day 10: 31-10-13 : Departure from Dwarka at 05.55 a.m by 22905 Okha-Howrah Express.

Day 11: 01-11-13 : Train

Day 12: 02-11-13 : Reach Howrah by 03.30 a.m.

Our first priority was to book the online train tickets since it was peak season due to durga puja and diwali.

Thanks to the IRCTC website. Because, our train tickets were confirmed for all journey with lower and middle berths except the return ticket from Dwarka by 22905 Okha-Howrah Express. It was waiting more than 40 in 3AC. On enquiry, it was found that there is only one 3AC coach available with no 2AC coach from Okha to Howrah with quota for stations enroute. So, we realized that there was very little possible chance to get it confirmed.

By the time, other trains from Ahmedabad / Dwarka originating on 30 & 31-10-13 were full. As we search in the rail website, we found that few berths in 3AC were available from Dwarka to Ahmedabad on 30-10-13 in 18402 Okha-Puri Express. We booked it at once. But again, trains from Ahmedabad via Nagpur, Bilaspur route to Howrah or nearby stations were all waitlisted ranging more than 60 (3AC) and 200 (SL). Then we searched for alternate routes so that we reach Kolkata by 02-11-13 (Kali Puja) as scheduled.

Fortunately, berths were found available in Ahmedabad-Ujjain/Indore route on 30-10-13. Okha-Puri Express was schedule to arrive in Ahmedabad at 5.20 p.m and link train to Ujjain from Ahmedabad was at 7.45 p.m. We enquired the running status of Okha-Puri Express from Okha to Ahmedabad for last few weeks and found that it ran on time and even before schedule in some occasion. Taking into consideration this statistic/report, we booked confirmed tickets to Ujjain i.e. inclusion of one more place / Jyotirlinga Darshan in our tour itinerary.

Again the same hurdle - No tickets from Ujjain to Howrah. Then, we decided to spend one day at Ujjain and return Kolkata via Delhi spending one full day there with our relatives. And to God’s grace, we got confirmed tickets from Ujjain to Delhi and again from Delhi to Sealdah.

So, due to this, we had a change in our schedule and finally it looked as follows:

Dwarka Temple Darshan, city tour with sightseeing at Bhet Dwarka and Nageswar Jyotirlinga Darshan by bus operated by Dwarka Municipal Corporation, as per availability.

Day 9: 30-10-13 : Departure from Dwarka at 08.15 a.m by 18402 Okha-Puri Weekly Express for Ahmedabad. Train from Ahmedabad 19309 Gandhinagar – Indore Express at 07.45 p.m for Ujjain.

Day 10: 31-10-13 : Reach Ujjain at 04.05 a.m. Maha Kaleshwar Jyotirlinga Darshan with local sightseeing. Departure from Ujjain by 12415 Indore-Nizamuddin Express at 05.35 p.m for Delhi (Hazrat Nizamuddin Station).

Day 11: 01-11-13 : Reach Hazrat Nizamuddin (Delhi) at 05.40 a.m. Spend full day with our relatives. Departure from New Delhi at 07.45 p.m for Sealdah by 12260 Duronto Express.

Day 12: 02-11-13 : Reach Sealdah by 12.30 p.m.

Such a well researched planning is envy of all travelers. Hats off to you for providing such minute details. Thanks for sharing.

But, I have a small point to make. It is a pity that you had omitted Vadodara (Baroda), my favorite city, one of the friendliest city I had ever seen, where I had spent a few years of my service life. The city of Gaekwads, the king of erstwhile Baroda State, a heritage city with palaces, lakes, garden, museums, perhaps the best and nicest city of Gujarat. In my humble opinion, this city is a must see of Gujarat State. For people from Bengal, it will be interesting to know that this city has close connection with such Bengali luminaries like Rishi Aurobindo, Ramesh Chandra Dutt, Nandalal Bose etc., who had spent many years of their active life in this city and had enriched the social, religious, educational and cultural life of this city. In future if you (or for that matter any other IMers) happen to be in Gujarat, please do visit this city. I can assure you that this city will not disappoint you.

Thanks Asish Da for the information. Surely, I shall add "Vadodara" in my tour itinerary when we plan Gujarat tour in future covering "Rann of Kutch".

PROLOGUE Continued.....

Our next priority was to book a cab for tour in and around Ahmedabad and another one for Diu from Somnath.

We contacted Ahmedabad Office of Gujarat tourism for booking of cabs. They informed that only AC Tavera and Innova class cabs were available to them and that too at the rate of Rs. 11/- and Rs 12/- per km respectively.

Contact Details:

H.K House Ground Floor, Opp Bata Show room.
Ashram road, Ahmedabad.
Phone: +91 79 26589172, 26576434
Telefax: +91 79 26582183

Car tariff of Gujarat Tourism is available at: http://www.gujarattourism.com/showpa...6&lang=English

We also searched the following sites in this regard:

(i) http://www.savaari.com/ahmedabad-car...tals-ahmedabad

(ii) http://www.divyatravels.in/tariff.html

(iii) http://www.carrentalahmedabad.in/

Atlast, we could collect two contact numbers, One Mr. Sattubha (09825373205) and other Mr. Mukarram Shaikh (09824361058).

On contact, it was learnt that Mr. Sattubha was based in Bhuj / Rann of Kutch area, but Mr. Mukarram Shaikh was based in Ahmedabad and could easily rent a car.

Mr. Mukarram Shaikh initially quoted us Rs 8/- per km and 250 km average per day for Tata Vista (AC). We sent our tour plan for 3 days stay in Ahmedabad to his e-mail address with a SMS to his contact number.

He, then, confirmed the booking and allotted us a Swift Dzire (AC) car at the same rate. Car number, name of the driver with his contact details were mailed to us. He even assured us that the driver will contact us and be ready with the car at the Ahmedabad railway station.

However, we couldn’t collect any information on cab booking for tour to Diu. So, we had to depend on spot booking at Somnath.
