Split or stay in one location?

Hi - I am travelling with family (wife and a 3yr old) to Goa for about 4 nights - 5 days in the week of Oct 16th. I am keen to avoid the crowds of North Goa (I stayed in Calangute) and would much rather prefer the quiet of South Goa (Agonda, Palolem). But since its the first visit for my wife, I am also keen to show her around Old Goa and Panaji. At the same time travelling with a kid can be trouble some and the distances from South Goa kind of have me in a bind.

So,
Option 1: Split my stay and put up in Panaji or Vasco at least for the first two nights. Our flight reaches late at night and this may be better to explore the area before moving on to another 2 nights in South Goa.
Option 2: Spend the entire time in South Goa, and travel to Panaji/Old Goa on a day trip, though I see that will be at least 70kms one way and wonder if it will be a good option with a kid.

What do you suggest?

How about staying in the Betalbatim area? Closer to the airport, closer to Old Goa and Panaji, closer to South Goa. Read http://www.indiamike.com/india/goa-f23/suggestion-for-overnight-stay-on-beach-t265057/

Seems like this is a good area. How do the beaches compare to Palolem/Agonda?

What is it that you are expecting from a beach?

Not crowded, scenic, but at the same time decent food and vehicle hire options nearby. Those are kind of opposite parameters I think, though I did think Agonda/Palolem came close in some respect.

More than decent food (tick) at Martin's Corner, MKOA, Fishka (as mentioned in the linked post), not crowded (tick), scenic beach (tick), vehicle hire options nearby (tick).

All requirements ticked.
