Private Internet Access in Goa (3G)
...as mentioned in post #13, I have the Tata Indicom CDMA USB Modem and it sucks big time. Long loading times, Page Load Errors way below dial-up speed. And I just found out today, that I'm even right in the middle of their 2 towers with great overlap. But still the speed is abysmal.
Are the !dea/Reliance any better speed-wise?
Aren't there any better/faster private internet options in Goa? What is everyone using??

Another option is cable modem. It is reasonably fast (250K or so) and reliable, but requires a non-refundable installation fee (which was Rp8000 two years ago with my provider) so would only be a viable option if you were planning a long stay or returning regularly. An 'unlimited' package is Rp1500/month and is only unlimited at night as there are limits to daytime downloads.
If you are interested, check the TV cable provider in your area; my account is with Sagar Vision in Vagator and other providers may offer different options.

...my Cable TV provider is Tata Sky. Have to check with the landlord then.
Thanks for the tip!

That should read satellite TV provider. Internet via cable TV is not available in Candolim or Calangute to the best of my knowledge. You can get DSL service through BSNL but for that your landlord will have to get a telephone line installed which he may not be willing to do.
Oha! That will probably be another problem then... just today landlord mentioned that he expects me to pay the Tata Fees (Rs 300) per month as well, even though we agreed before I moved in that I'll only pay electricity as an extra. Let's see about that. Guess at minimum is just reduced my chances for further requests. :-(
Great news for all the people in Goa is broadband Internet Faciality on wireless system (Huawei USB Dongle is now possible) Tata Indicom a private player in indian telecommunication market has now launched the Tata Indicom Photon Plus faciality here.Technically soft launch was done on 24th of september but officialy 30th september saw the new dawn for a hassle free internet.
Technically speaking this system works on CDMA 2X that is EVDO and the speeds are 3.1 Mbps download and 1.5 mbps upload. But practically i have tested this speed at different places In calangute and panaji the speed is around 2 Mbps download and 1 mbps upload which is very fair. i used clients like skype, second life and other online gaming portals which needs quite a lot of data transmission and everything worked fine along with a successful video conference.
Any further information can be sough on the website www.tataindicom.com and then navigate to photon plus.
i have tested the device in north goa and it is working fine. HSIA towers(High speed internet acess) are available here and the speed are great but in some inner parts)(Villages)of goa where the old Simple CDMA towers are there the device automatically connects to CDMA in absense of HSIA towers and the speed drops down to 150 Kbps, but work is on for converting all towers to HSIA compatable. this technology is comparatively very new in goa but has alot of potential. This can also be connected to a router and wi fi zone can be made at any place. The facilities just needs to be xplored. I am still doing research on the same and the biggest plus point is it relatively very very cheap. the device costs around rs 3500 and then there are monthly charges depending upon your data uses which are also not much.
Any questions regarding the same feel free to jot a post.

IDEA Net Setter
Hi
I was in South Goa for 3 months at the beginning of the year and had my laptop with me.
I found a USB Dongle for Sale from the IDEA Network. It was called Net Setter. You get a SIM to go with it and can purchase access on a monthly basis.
The spped of the connection reflected the lifestyle in India. Sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn't and invariably it was quite slow. However, unless you're transferring huge data packages, it is fine.
The dongle cost around £40.
I am not sure if there are any other products out there now with better transfer speeds.

Thanks for info, good news for me. Do you know any place in North Goa where I can buy and better take for test Photon Plus WiFi router? D'u know about any high-speed towers around Arambol? Thanks.

Idea net setter connects to Internet using the GPRS (Global packet radio service) technology and sometimes along with an advanced technology called EDGE thn GPRS. Techniclly speking the speed never goes up from 144 kbps because tht is the threshhold. so no one will ever get a very good speed on that. but now its possible .tatta indicom photon plus has been launched in goa which works on EVDO technology which giver good practical speed of 2 to 3 mbps (download) nd 1 mbps uplod.

dear roman, I think you will get the connection in any tta indicom outlet. trying at Mapusa will be a gret idea. I will be enquiring about it tody evening and let you know about that. For now only the USB dongle has been launched wi fi router will be launched within some period of time.
But anyways you can also purchse a router from the market and connect it to the USB dongle it will be serving the purpose too. Havent tried the device near arambhol but s soon i am on it i will let you know. just drop your contacts. In just few days you will be seeing the banners all over. calangute bus stands has got this official advertisement oif the same. i will pass you the contct number.
