Canacona to Old Goa to Margao

We are spending 5 nights in Goa in January (two adults and two children). We have 4 nights in Canacona, and we are getting an early train to Hampi from Madgaon on the sixth day. I would also like to see Old Goa. Is it realistic to hire a driver to take us from Canacona to Old Goa on the day before our train, wait for us whilst we look around, and then take us to a hotel in Margao? Or is it better to stay in Old Goa and go to Margao very early the next morning? We will have our bags with us, so a bus wouldn't be ideal. Or are neither of these options realistic?

Thank you for any advice.

Can't Old Goa be seen in the days that you have in Canacona?

I was about to tell Aarosh about the distance issue, you will be covering an extra stretch from Madgaon to Cancona and back if done on days staying at Cancona.

However there seems to be a way to do it if you do it by train.
So either you do it on the days you are in Cancona, keep your luggage at hotel and take the train no. 70102 (Karwar Pernem DEMU)to Karmali, which is very close to Old Goa - then hire a vehicle there for local sight seeing or even better take a local bus going to old goa and do your sight seeing at leisure. Come back to Karmali, take the same train (70101 this time) back at 6 pm, reach Cancona by 7 50 pm. But then you do have to make the travel back to Margao for your early morning train some other day - which can be done by hiring a vehicle in the morning.
Option 2 - Take your luggage with you in the same train as above, but travel a day prior to your departure. Book a vehicle at Karmali station for the whole day and land in Margao by evening by the same vehicle and depart in the morning. Option of taking a bus/rickshaw from Karmali to Old Goa and keeping your luggage in a room in a hotel, doing sightseeing at leisure and then opting to come back to Margao either by a hired vehicle in the evening is also available. You should be able to find a cheap room just to keep you luggage in daytime in Old Goa. If required put your personal lock to the door than relying on the lock given by the hotel/guesthouse.

Canacona to Old Goa to Margao

And you can always take a vehicle from cancona for the entire day, just that it would cost a good amount.

Belated thanks for the reply.
That is very helpful, and the train option sounds like it is probably workable.
I can see that the train is unreserved. Does it get very crowded? is it feasible for us to travel with two children and luggage, without getting separated and squashed?
Many thanks again.

If I remember correctly, the train goes through Canacona quite early...5:00 amish? Don't forget, it only stops for a very few minutes at this train stop :)
It might be the best of times or the worst of times...but it's the only time you've got!
