Residence certificate

Assuming that one spends more than 183 days in India in one year and obtains a residence certificate, how long does the certificate last?
Does one need to spend 183+ days in India every year in order to keep the certificate current?

As far as I can gather a Residency Certificate lasts as long as the Visa.
So, when you re-register with the Police within the 14 days when you arrive with a new visa, they will give you a new Residency Certificate (which sometimes, but not always, also has to be produced when you leave the country).

So, that's how long a Residency Certificate lasts.

I am getting a little confused, if the residence certificate only lasts as long as the visa and the visa is only for 180 days max. what is the purpose or advantage of having a residence cert.?

The visa in question is normally for more than 1 year.

I have a 1 year X visa and a Residency Cert which lasts 1 year. They expire on different dates. I can renew my visa without leaving the country and the Cert must be renewed at least 90 days, yes 90 [shock] before expiry. I think the visa expires 6th June and the Cert on 25th June.

Being able to renew ones visa without having to leave the country sounds like a useful facility, presumably this is only available if one has the residence cert. ?

It's a 1 year X visa. You renew at the FRO in Panjim.
