Hello,

Im hoping for some quick advice for this problem. I'm in India with a one year student visa. I registered three days after getting here. it's been seven weeks now and still they say they are processing the registration. The problem is I have a ticket to fly to the US in 4 days and i only just now learned i need this Residence Permit in order to exit India. But what can i do if they haven't even processed it yet?

I'm waiting to hear back from FRRO. Will they really prevent me from going if i don't have this paper? Is there any other measure i can take? Any advice will be super appreciated.

Thank you,
Steve

Have you visited FRRO again to find out what is happening?

You might ask them for an "exit visa" which is a stamp in your passport saying that they have no objection to you leaving.

Do you intend to return on the same visa?

The problem is that the FRRO office is in Chennai and I'm in Salem with only three days away from my flight.

But fortunately the ashram I'm studying in has a center in Chennai also. So they sent someone to inquire in person on my behalf. The office immediately processed the registration and now I have the digital document of the registration papers.

So if I simply print this out and present it at the airport, should I be cleared to go? Do you suggest taking any further steps, or am I alright now?

Thanks,
Steve

I have never been in that situation, so I can only offer my opinion on this. My opinion is... you are good to go.

When I last registered it was paper or nothing, none of this online/digital stuff. Now I have OCI so have not needed to register at all for a while. If anyone has contrary information or opinion, hope they chime in here.

Nobody really knows what different branches of the Immigration Bureau see on their computer screens, but the thing is supposed to have been a centralised system for a few years now, so probably the airport official will see your registration. Take the paper anyway: they still like stamping things
