PIO VS Extension to Entry(X) visa for US Citizen minor to Indian citizen parents.

Hello All,
My US Citizen daughter is almost 4.5 years old and having her entry visa(X) in her US passport about to expire in March 2011. Her passport is going to expire in May 2011.
I am currently in India on my prolonged work assignment and we will return back to US around june/july 2011.
My questions are:
-Since her entry visa is expiring in March 2011 and she needs to be staying with me here in India till june/july 2011, what will be my best bet?
-Should I try renewing her Entry visa(X) /Apply for PIO card ?
- If I decide to renew her Entry visa(X) , will it work if her US Passport is expiring in May 2011.
-Should I go ahead and renew her passport first and do the extension work later?
-Approximate cost involved in Extension of Entry visa /PIO card application.
-Can someone please help me out with that? I was kinda keen on getting PIO card so she can visit here any time and see her grand parents. What's the timeframe involved in getting PIO card and what documents are required?
Any help will be appreciated.
Thanks in Advance.

Get her a New Passport first. Everything else will follow from there.

Thanks for your response. What is the time required to get her passport renewed in India? Can anyone please suggest the procedure?

Doesn't she have a US passport. You need to get her a US passport.
Look up the US consulate's website nearest to you. Everything is there regarding passports.

Yes, get the US passport renewed first. She can't get X visa renewed without it, and she needs one anyway past March 2011. Here in the U.S. new passports are taking 6 weeks, and expedited 2-3 weeks, so a renewal abroad I'd guesstimate 3-4 weeks.

Is your spouse an Indian citizen? If not, your daughter might be eligible for OCI. This is for OCI & of course there's similar info out there for PIO
http://www.mha.nic.in/pdfs/oci-faq.pdf

Last I checked, the 5 yr X was comparable in price to PIO somewhere in the $250-300 range. Check the website for exact amounts. It will also list the documents you need much like the OCI link above.

Time frame in the U.S. has been anywhere from 3 to 6 weeks at least in my circle of acquaintances. You'd have to check the forum for info on Indian timelines. To be on the safe side, I'd plan on giving it at least 2 months for PIO/OCI.

Thanks all for your responses. Yes my daughter does have US Passport but it's valid until End of may 2011. Me and my spouse both are indian citizens so she is not eligible for OCI. I have checked that.
I was thinking to get her PIO card first since her visa expires(prior the expiration of her passport) in end of March 2011. I have heard time to get your PIO is approx. 3-4 weeks. Should there be a problem if I try to get her PIO first and then renew her passport?

Thanks all. I have taken appointment for her in Mumbai Consulate for second week of december. Hopefully I should be getting her passport by end of december. I should be going for her PIO card after that. Thanks once again for your helpful information.

Actually the US embassy website says all the passport applications abroad are treated as expedited by default. And that they will take about a week.

It would appear that expedited has a different definition in the U.S. itself - my brother's been waiting on his "expedited" passport for 4.5 weeks!

Did your brother send the application thru mail? Since my daughter is minor, she will have to appear in person. I am not sure if this could make any difference. Also, they have asked for parent's identification. Will my indian passport with valid US Visa suffice the requirement?
Any clue?

Please visit your nearest US consulate. She would need to put in a fresh application for a renewal passport. Take your daughter, her passport, her birth certificate, your passports and maybe a few other forms of ID for yourself. The fee will be $105USD (or around Rs 5,000).

When I did this I got a replacement passport due to name change, but all I really needed was my passport and my marriage certificate. So essentially just her US passport would suffice.

Also, I would recommend going to the nearest FRRO and getting the Entry visa converted to a PIO card. :-) good luck

PIO card via Mail/In person?

Thanks all for helping me out regarding my daughter's passport renewal. Now next task is to get a PIO card for her. I don't live in any of cities listed by FRROs. (Delhi,Mumbai..etc). How can I do the PIO card application.
Do they accept application by mail? can I send all the documents, demand draft etc to them and get it done?
Currently I am in Ahmedabad. Does it require me to make an additional trip to Delhi or Mail is fine?
Please let me know. If they accept application by Mail, do I need to send all the documents in original as well as the copies or just the copies are fine?
Anyone if can help me out please respond. Thanks in Advance.

Thanks nycank. I did google it before posting this. However didn't come across this link. It's really informative. In list of documents required, it lists photocopies of other things however in parents/grand parents passport,it doesn't mention photocopy. Is it ok if I submit true copies or should I send originals?
