Hi, I am an Indian citizen and here in US on L1 visa. My L1 got expired last month, and staying here on valid I94 (valid till mid'2013).

I am visiting India during july'12 for L1 stamping. while booking my tickets, my travel agent told me that I need to have transit visa for UK/France because my US visa is expired. I am not sure why I need to have valid US visa to transit from UK/France airport ?

Any comments ?

Typically you do not need a Transit visa. Given that you are from ATL area, You are better off flying ATL-AMS-BOM on DL and would not need a transit visa.

According to the UKBA website http://www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/vi...nsit-airside/# Indian citizens transiting through UK airports require a UK transit visa. However you are exempt from this requirement if you have a valid airline ticket for travel via the UK as part of a journey to or from the US AND if you hold a valid entry visa for the US OR if you are transiting the UK no more than 6 months after the date when you last entered US with a valid entry visa for that country.

I presume therefore that the B1 visa would secure exemption from the transit visa requirement; Otherwise, you would need a transit visa unless you have been in the US for no more than six months.

Why the rules are like this I have no idea, except for the thought that bureaucrats love to complicate things unnecessarily.
