Just checking in to see how this was going.

I got my PAN card, which is great to have....but made no difference.

I know another ex pat with a PAN card out here in Jaipur, he tried somewhere and they told him they system was down, just like they told me that on another visit to anothe place.....which basically meant they didn't know what to do and so wouldn't try.

I'll try one more time before mid March i leave for a six week work stint in the UK, otherwise i will wait to see what the consequences are when i get back!

Does anyone have a link to the actual government order requiring foreigners who reside in India for more than 182 days to get an aadhaar? I want to print it out to show the reluctant tehsildar, but now all I can find are articles (in respectable things like Economic Times) saying that it is required. But the officer won't be swayed by a news article, but might be by a government order.

Thanks in advance!

Sorry, you cannot get anyone to issue that order. The Supreme Court has ruled that Aadhaar card is not mandatory, even for Indian citizens. However, citizens are eligible for Aadhaar number if they are residents.

Thank you aarosh, I'll print that.

And nycank, thanks, that's right, the aadhaar is not mandatory. So I amend my question, and leave it here to be answered in the future, if ever possible:

Does anyone have a link to a government order specifying that aadhar CAN be given to foreigners who are resident, ie who have been inIndia for 182 days?

Thank you!

Beautiful, thank you! The first link includes the actual Aadhaar act, and a clearer memo from the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, saying "Every resident shall be entitled to obtain an Aadhaar number..." and "Aadhaar number does not confer any right of citizenship or domicile."

I'll print it and show it to the recalcitrant officer. Thank you!

I have been following this thread from the start, but unfortunately I can't remember
all that has been said, so I will just give you my input.

I went to one of the aadhaar counters in a bank, took along a letter from a gazatted officer and got enrolled, last Wednesday.

This morning I got a link to my e-aadhaar , and was emailed that my proper card will be posted to me.

Ps. When I say I, I mean my 73 year old mum.
Lord, Grant me the Serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to hide the bodies of those people I had to kill because they pissed me off.

Yes. This time I checked the application properly and it doesn't ask you for nationality. I presume it defaults to Indian automatically.

I posted a while back that the stuff we can't see on the aadhaar card has me listed as an Indian.

Aadhaar card for Foreigner?

I think it is a bit unkind that they classified you as a yob!
