I spent around 10 months in India, in 2017. I have just applied for a new visa, and when it asked for my previous visa details I noticed it said you had to register if you stayed longer than 180 days. I didn't do this on my last visit as I wasn't aware that I needed to. No-one said anything to me when I left the country, and I just have the entry stamp and the exit stamp. Now, will this be flagged on my new application? Really kicking myself now, as I of course would have registered had I noticed it.

Well after a lot of reading it seems I was very lucky to not get stopped when trying to leave the country. I honestly just thought I had been given a 1 year tourist visa and that it was valid for a year. I must have just had some luck on that day. Now, the stamps I have got in my passport just look like the standard entry/exit stamps. I am pretty sure I won't get fined for a previous overstay, after I have been stamped to leave. I just worry that they might turn me away at the border if I get the new visa. I can't believe I was so stupid to not even notice the 180 day rule until now, over a year since I came home. Feeling anxious now.

The question regarding registration is for people who had visas types that require registration. If you get the new visa I doubt you'll be turned back. The chance to manually tally up your time spent and raise a red flag is past. I'd be anxious too though.

Sometimes its better to be lucky than good.

Wonder if because I just got stamped in and out as normal, they won't really have any flags on the system, and it just depends on if the person issuing the new visa notices the dates. Hopefully they will see that I'm not trying to live there, I mean it's been over a year since I last visited.

Right. If you had had the registration and shown it at exit, it wouldn't be stamped or stapled on your passport or anything, so the officials looking at your passport will probably assume you had it if you stayed over 180 days.

But if everything is a lot more computerised and coordinated now, that could be different. But if it were so you would have been flagged at exit, I guess.

It is not what is on the passport that matters, it is what is on their computer. They may not even check other passport pages.

Back in the day when I had one, I needed to show RP/RC on the way out, as my stay might have been a year or two, let alone 181 days. I never showed it on the way in.
