Hi,

I was about to begin the process of acquiring transcripts from my uni when I noticed my tenth, twelfth and degree certificates all have just my First and Middle names; whereas my old passport (expired recently, about to renew) and other similar ID proofs like Aadhaar and License have my surname as well, as a third name (family name).

1. The uni is asking for an ID proof and my Aadhaar and License both have my surname, but my degree certificate doesn't. My transcript will not contain my surname. How big an issue is that?

2. I will be renewing my passport in a couple of days, how do I go about this? My old passport has my surname, but since my other educational documents do not have my surname, can I just NOT submit my surname while entering information for the renewal? Or is there a bigger process? As I understand, surname is an optional field in the renewal form.

If this is the case, I can just update my name on my aadhaar card and be done with the whole thing.

Any information will be appreciated, I need all the help and urgently.

Regards,
Jeff.

It is not clear in your post, what exactly you want.

If you want to continue the name as mentioned in your passport, you may continue doing so.

You may use your current Aadhaar Card as ID proof. There should not be any issue.

Thank you Prakaant, for your prompt response. Let me just make it clear;

My educational documents (all of them) do not have my surname, they have my First name + Middle name. My ID proofs like aadhaar, passport, DL, etc., however, have my surname. So they show First name + Second name + Surname.

My passport is up for renewal now, and although my current passport has all three names (i.e., FN + SN + Surname), can I choose not to have my surname in my renewed passport? i.e., just my First name + Middle name.

Yes, you may do so.

You will have to go through the name change process by getting a sworn affidavit and advertisement on one local and one national level newspaper.

To avoid such lengthy process, you may continue with the old pattern as it exists: First and middle name in Given Name section and surname in Surname section.

Thank you Prakaant.

But since my educational documents do not have my surname, wouldn't that cause a problem if I have to apply for a PR with another country? Would it be counted as a mismatch?

There shouldn't be any problem. If there is one, you may show them copies of affidavit and newspaper advertisements.
