Hello,

Sorry for this rather long post, I would be very thankful if you could kindly go through my post. This is Chinmayee. I am a physiotherapy Masters student in Bengaluru. I am from Assam originally. I have just recently applied for a fresh passport from an RPO at Bengaluru. My duration of stay in Bengaluru at present is less than a year (I moved on September 2016 from Assam). Thus I mentioned all my previous addresses (which also includes my permanent address in Assam) that I have stayed in the last one year including my current address in Bengaluru.

I recently received text msgs through sms PSK seva about my application status and I got all clear reports for PV for my current address. Just yesterday I got a phone call from my local police at my hometown in Assam saying that my passport is ready in their police station and that I have to go there and pick it up. The police added that it will be sent back (where I don't know!) and my passport application status will be shown unavailable if I don't pick it up from there in the next 7 days. Now, this is annoying since I was told by some friends of mine that passport would be sent to the current address of the applicant and the physical presence of the applicant at the current address is ONLY required for PV.

Also, I am confused by my application status shown online which says : "Police Report has been submitted by Commissioner Office, District Bengaluru and action for passport printing is initiated, to be followed by lamination, signing, quality check and dispatch."

So I am very unsure as to what is to be done in this matter since it's difficult for me to travel back to my hometown in the 7 days duration as I have semester exams starting next month. Also I am not sure what the online application status is trying to reflect where to my stupid grey cells it only means that the passport has NOT yet been dispatched and is only being prepared to get dispatched (if I am not mistaken?).

I confirmed with the local police here saying that this should not have happened and added that they can do nothing more than the PV which they already did. They also sounded a bit unsure to what has happened to the situation. I was wondering if this is related to the bribing thing (I am very sorry if I am not making sense since I have no idea how this passport thing works in the Indian system) at the police station in my hometown.

I would be obliged and highly appreciate if you can give me any information regarding this and whether I should wait for my status update or should I be taking serious note to the police at my hometown address. In any case, it would be great if you can advice/suggest me what necessary steps I should take regarding the situation from here onwards.

Thanks and I appreciate your help and time in advance.

Welcome to IndiaMike, Chinmayee123

The Indian Passport experts (Prakaant) will be on hand soon, but in the meantime, my advice is to not even entertain thoughts of a 'little bribery' here or there. Either resolve it yourself at the Bangalore PSK (Passport Seva Kendra) or bear with the babus' (bureaucrats') mess-up and collect it from Assam.

ViShVa is correct, Chinmayee, you should never "entertain thoughts of a 'little bribery' here or there".

As far as I know, it never happens as you have mentioned.

Passport office never sends a passport to a police station. It is always sent to the address mentioned by applicant.

It's correct procedure.

You should wait to receive your passport or any news from Passport Office.

If there is any bad news Passport Office will be sending a Show Cause Notice. But as Passport printing has been initiated, you should wait to receive your passport at your address.

Just wait, and hope for the best...
