Unfortunately I won't have the time to stay longer and join the Holi day as well, but the Lathmar Holi looks to me a bit more authentic experience.

The question is : how to know the exact date of Laddu / Lathmar Holi days in 2014 ?? When are they published?
And during those days (basically a week before Holi) , is worth to go to the Banke Bihari temple in Vrindavan as well?

Thank you
Hello botty
It is very simple even you can also calculate the dates of lathmar or laddu maar holi. It is never published but can be calculated based on Moon phases.
In case you know the exact date of Holi Celebration, then the following is the method to calculate the dates:
1. Laddu Maar holi is on 8th day of bright half of Lunar just before Holi. It is around 8 days before Holi date. This year Holi is on 17th Mar so Laddu-Maar is on 9th.
2. Lath-Maar at Barsana is on the next day of Laddu-Maar. i.e. on 10th Mar
3. Lath-Maar at NandGaon is on the next day of Lath-Maar at Barsana.
4. Celebrations at Vrindavan is on the next day of above i.e. on 11th day of bright half of Moon.

I'm thinking of being in Mumbai for Holi with my girlfriend, we are both 18. I've heard mixed reports about Holi? Will it be safe for me and my girlfriend or should we avoid a big city like Mumbai and Holi?

Hi all,

Interesting thread. A friend of mine is going to be in India for Holi, but she'll most likely be in the South or travelling up the west coast, somewhere between Trivandrum and Mumbai. I've got a feeling Holi is better in the North, but does anyone have a suggestion for a good place for my friend to enjoy the festivities?

Thanks, G

Hey Bob,
Normally it's safe to celebrate where you have groups of guys and girls.
avoid stags and getting into any situations.
people love to entertain foreigners on festivals and they are welcoming too.
just take care that you get invited by a good clan.
what I suggest that go to a posh area and contact the manager of that colony that you want to celebrate Holi with the residents.
they will arrange for you accordingly and i hope You guys would enjoy getting from white to multi-colored.

Mumbai is fine ... but if you move further down ... Holi is not at all celebrated at multiple places...
suggest to visit north or be in Mumbai ...

Staying @ Barsana during Lath Maar

Hi Kamal,

I actually have planned my travel to Barsana / Vrindavan, as you have suggested. This being my first visit to Mathura region, I am clueless as to stay facilities. I am wondering if i can simply walk into a Hotel / Dharamsala which can be safe for my photo equipment. (i am least fussy about hotel cleanliness, though would prefer western WC )

Can you suggest a place to stay put the night of 9 @ Barsana?!

Rahul

I would suggest that you be there at Barsana (around 30-40 km of Mathura) on or before 8th March if you want to make your trip really memorable.
On 9th March there will be Laddu-Maar holi at Barsana Radha Rani temple. I enjoy this Laddu-Maar holi even more that the Lath-Maar Holi. In the night of 9th there will be various programs in which people from different corners of the India will come to sing and listen spiritual songs related to Radha and Krishna.
On 10th the world famous Lath-Maar holi will be played in the streets of Barsana village. On 11th a similar Lath-Maar holi will be played at Nand-Gaon. Nand Gaon is the village of Lord Krishna however Barsana is the village of Radha Rani.
After this on 11th itself you can go to Vrindavan. The holi festival at Vrindavan will be celebrated on 12th. Don't miss the celebration at Banke-Bihari temple on that day.

So your itinerary should be:
8-Mar-2014: Arrival at Delhi and come directly to Barsana.
9-Mar-2014: Enjoy the Laddu-Maar holi at Barsana. In the night participate in the Samaaj Gaan (i.e. listing the spiritual songs (Bhajans))
10-Mar-2014: Lath-Maar holi at Barsana Village.
11-Mar-2014: Lath-Maar holi at Nand Gaon (a village approximately 6-7 km from Barsana).
12-Mar-2014: Enjoy holi at Banke-Bihari temple and other temples at Vrindavan.
13/14/15 - Each temple in Vrindavan celebrates holi at different days so you can enjoy the holi in other festivals or visit other places in India as per your wish.

Best Regards
Kamal

Hi Rishabh,

Ive just gotten back from Vrindavan and Barsana.

The celebrations are on till 17th. So you still have time to catch up with.

Do carry enough poly-bags and cling film to cover your gear.

As for accommodation you can try Hotel Shubham holidays or Hotel Majesty.

Rest you can find out the places where they would be celebrating each day.

cheers.

Both the hotels are at Vrindavan
