When I was in Udaipur around the 20th of December in 2010 there was a rather spectacular and intense parade involving huge (like three stories high) lantern-like objects being carried through the streets by groups of men flagellating themselves with some type of whip....what the heck was that all about? I can't find anything on the internet. I believe it has to do with the death of a religious leader?
It might be the best of times or the worst of times...but it's the only time you've got!

The structures are called 'Tazia / Tajia' and represent imam husain's tomb. This is a Shia festival, and is often criticised by Sunni hardliners. The structures are paraded through the city and then buried in a communal burial ground also called a karbala (named after the battleground where Husain - the prophets grandson was beheaded).
Look up Muharram for the self flagellation - the festival that ends with this procession.
