Dear IMers,

I am visiting Darjeeling, Gangtok and Pelling in the Oct end.

I have following questions. Kindly help.

1. I have read that some protests are going on in the Darjeeling and surrounding area and there is a possiblity of Transport strikes also. Please suggest if this would be safe and comfortable tour if we travel during this time.

2. We will land in Kolkata airport around 2:30am in the morning. We have a train from Sealdah to New Jalpaiguri at 6:30am. The Kolkata airport to Sealdah railway station is approx. 16 KMs (source: Google Maps). I am concerned about the safety during travelling in wee hours as I will be along with my family. Please suggest travel mode.

3. We will reach New Jalpaiguri at 6:30pm. Will I get any transport (prefarably cabs, good public transport is also fine) from NJP to Darjeeling during this time. I would also like to know the frequency of buses.

Please help.
No one realizes how beautiful it is to travel until he comes home and rests his head on his old, familiar pillow. - Lin Yutang

It's better to avoid Darjeeling now. You may go to Gangtok directly from NJP.

It's usually safe. I would suggest you to wait for a couple of hours at the airport & take a cab around 4.30 am to reach Sealdah by 5.30 / 6 am. You will get prepaid Taxis outside Airport. You may hire UBER cabs too.

Yes, you'll get cabs at 6.30 pm. But it would be better to stay at a hotel in Siliguri for that night. I would not suggest a drive to the hills during night ( basically because of dense fog ) . You can start for Darjeeling / Gangtok early next morning

Political scenario in Darjeeling is not favorable to travelling I think (although strike had been called off 3 weeks ago) . Scattered clashes ( between two factions of GJM & also between state police & Pro-Gurung political workers ) are being reported almost everyday. Anyways , keep a close watch on the city's latest news & decide accordingly.
