Hi India Miker's,
I know very little about places to board the toy train, but would love to see the views. Can you give me some hints re the best trip please (if this is the right way to put it?). Are tickets difficult to purchase? I am considering a very quick trip (2 days arriving and departing by air) as my traveling partner is very interested in riding the train. I would hate to arrive and not be able to get tickets so please offer your advice. I would like to know what the weather is like in late October too please. My traveling partner is elderly, do I need to consider any altitude issues? Lastly, how is the political situation there now and is this something I need to be wary of? Sorry for so many questions! Many thanks..

I'm not too sure about the weather in October but as far as the trains are concerned they can be booked ahead in the normal way through Cleartrip or IRCTC. The best option for the non-rail geek is probably to take one of the daily 'Joy Trains' from Darjeeling to Ghum and then back again. These are usually hauled by one of the ancient steam locos. The train stops at Batasia Loop , site of the Gurkha memorial, where you will get views of Kanchenjunga if the weather is right. You also get about half an hour at Ghum where there is a small museum. When booking you need to book from DJ to DJRZ.

The town itself is at over 6,000 ft and has some very steep streets. I don't think that the political situation is too bad at the moment. If you go make time to visit the Windamere Hotel even if it is only for afternoon tea.

There is a video of the railway here The bits about Darjeeling itself come in the latter part.

Your video makes me eager to quickly grab a seat in that train.

Anyway, we are visiting DJ in the end of June but i am unable to book tickets for the joy ride. The ticket status is shown as" not available". I am planning to stay for 3 days. Can you suggest other way to get tickets for joy ride? we don't want to miss the ride. can we book at Darjeeling station?

Welcome to IndiaMike

I just looked and was able to find availability on Joy Trains for 27,28.29 and 30th June. Which site were you looking at? Remember that you need to enter from DJ to DJRZ

I had a look at the site that you mention and I think that it has not been updated for some time. It has not been possible to do the full DHR trip from NJP to Darjeeling since about June 2010 due to a serious landslide. The much shorter Joy Train trip from Darjeeling to Ghum and back again does still run 3 or 4 times per day and can be booked with Cleartrip or IRCTC in the normal way.

There is a bit more about the Darjeeling line on this thread http://www.indiamike.com/india/india...india-t197779/

You should also be aware that we do not usually allow SMS abbreviations such as 'pls' to be used in posts on this forum. We have many members who do not have English as a first language and such usage may confuse them. Pleas ebear this in mind when posting in future.
