We've decided to visit Darjeeling in APR 14 and booked Main building in Darjeeling tourist lodge for that.
Few suggestions required:
1. As booking of Darjeeling tourist lodge made by online, there was no choice possible ; I mean to say which floor or what kind of view room available. So can anyone who stayed in the main building earlier provide some room tips i.e. what are the best room in the main building and any contact person's name so that we ensure that.
2. We'll be there from 12th Morning and pack up on 15th. Half day will be spend on Toy train whose ticket to be booked soon and the another half day to be go to Tiger Hill etc.
Can anyone suggest some good itinerary and driver / travel agents?

Now at least it's working from home page, mentioned above, you should go to the online booking page i.e. http://app.westbengaltourism.gov.in/...ing/wbtdc.html
Happy booking!

Since, you are there from 12th morning to 15th, that leaves you with at least 3 full days to explore Darjeeling and surrounding areas... The experts may guide you better but as per my recent trips, I would like to give you certain suggestions-
If you are going for a Joy ride, go for the earliest one. When I was there in December, morning 8 o'clock ride was working. The benefit of going early morning ride is that you can see the peaks from the train itself during your journey... That is a wonderful experience.
I believe one full day is for Darjeeling sightseeing, which includes Peace Pagoda (nice one), Himalayan Mountaineering Institute and Darjeeling Zoo (must watch) Tea Estate visit, rope way, Tenzing rock. You can devote 12 th April for that.
Next day early morning go for Tiger Hill to visit Sunrise and to watch the peaks at the sunrise. Again it's a must... On this day you can plan for a joy ride at 10-40 a.m. ( although I will again suggest that 8 a.m. Ride would be the best, but it's difficult to manage once you go for Tiger hill) rest of the day, shopping, leisurely at Chowrasta and surrounding areas.
14th you can go for 1 day tour of Mirik and Pashupati Nagar...
15th- if you have time in the morning, you can fit the joy ride on this day at 8.

Not to discourage you, but in April, the chances are difficult that you can see Kanchandzonga peaks due to cloudy weather. Regarding Joy ride it is now not have so much fun which was earlier when I visited this area in 1985.
As you are there for 3 days so better do the ride till Kurseong as it will be still worth.

As far as the Joy Ride is concerned it is normally hauled by a steam loco. The Kurseong trains are normally diesel. If it was me I would do both.

Dave you are from Scotland and hence I've a question to you. I've visited some other hill stations not Darjeeling as some of my friends keep telling that Darjeeling is quite dirty. What is your opinion?

@avixorld- I would be more than glad to validate your plan..
You have asked question to Dave but I will also chip in with my answer. Till now I too have visited quite a few hill stations and I must say that Darjeeling may not fare very high on the rankings.. In fact the so called Mall Road of Darjeeling is such a disappointment... And yes Darjeeling appears to be cramped and congested..
Having said so, one must visit Darjeeling at least once, the reasons being-
1. The Historical toy train.. The train having a history of more than 130 years.. Isn't that amazing!!! Go there to absorb the experience of riding on the historical train... Further, take some snaps on the highest railway station in India, i.e. Ghum...
2. Sun rise at Tiger Hill- that's also an amazing experience when you could see the sun rising and it's light reflecting on the mighty Kanchenjunga... Wow!!
3. The famous Kaventer for breakfast, Glenery for cakes and a small restaurant called Kunga for delicious momos...
4. Himalayan Mountaineering Institute and Darjeeling zoo too are good..

I'm not sure that living in Scotland makes me much of an expert on Indian hill stations. I've visited four in total - all of them at the end of railways.

Darjeeling did not seem any dirtier than a lot of other places we have been to although the air pollution due to the traffic (and possibly steam engines) was bad in February 2011.

The two places that did seem very clean to us were Simla and Matheran

@Dave: what I mean e.g. I traveled in Dalhausi and find it's very clean but heard Darjeeling is not that cleaner. Want to validate the same from you though already Harshad gave a very succinct reply

I'm afraid that I am not familiar with Dalhausi. I would agree that Darjeeling is cramped and congested but I think that it has a lot to do with its situation on a steep mountainside. It was not designed for motor traffic.
