Hi IMers,

My wife and I will be visiting Darjeeling during the second half of June. I have a few queries.

How will be the weather condition and political condition then?
Can you suggest which places we can cover in 2-3 days?
What is the cab fare from NJP to Darjeeling and for siteseeing?
Is toy train working now?
Thanks,
Deep

Weather condition can a bit tricky depends on the monsoon ...But probably it will be clear sky in mid june...Political condition can not be assumed before...

Can you suggest which places we can cover in 2-3 days?

HMI,Zoo,Rock garden, ghoom monestry, Batasia Loop,Tiger Hill, happy valley tea garden, botanical garden...This can be done in 2 days ...You can also go to mirik lake on the 3rd day...

What is the cab fare from NJP to Darjeeling and for siteseeing?

This January a tata sumo take 1600/- from us but that was at 4.30 am... they might take around 1800/- to 2000/- depending on the rush..

Is toy train working now?

Toy train ply from Darjeeling to Kurseong only...
Happy Travelling...

I think in the second week of June, there will be rainy season and the possibility of seeing Kanchenjungha from Tiger Hill or Darjeeling is less. The car fare can from 1800/- to 2400/- depending on the rush. The shared car will cost 200/--250/-. You can cover all the sightseeing in one day. On the second day you can visit Mirik. The toy train route is partially working. You can enjoy the ride in Batasia Loop, but should buy ticket in advance.

The replies above are excellent and pretty much spot on.

Regarding the political situation, it is always volatile and can change anytime causing at least 1-2 day strikes BUT, the attempt will be to avoid having strikes during season time, so it should be alright.

Mid-end June will see the monsoons (there already has been a fair amount of rain in May and early june) so the likelihood of clear skies is low, but then again, it's the Himalayas where weather conditions are quite fickle and change regularly.

Place suggestions are pretty cool, except that if you prefer you could cross over the border to Nepal from Pashupati nagar (enroute to Mirik Lake) probably for the novelty or maybe for cheaper goods. I personally did not think it's a great deal but I did find it a novely the very first time I went (when I was 20 yrs of age, being able to pick up a can of beer and drink it while walking the streets of a foreign country - silly things kids like!)

If you like your shopping, then the wholesale centre of the region is in Kalimpong where you will find Tibetan/Buddhist artifacts at their cheapest, and other edibles (flat noodles/mushrooms, chamba, Tibetan sang) etc
Some of my ramblings!
