Vietnam or Cambodia 10 days trip in Feb 2018

Hi All,
We are three friends planning to visit Cambodia or/and Vietnam in coming February. We have 10 days for the trip, including travel.
As per my research so far, both countries in 10 days is very hectic.
So I am really looking for opinion on this. Also would it be possible to cover this trip under 35K INR per head(including travel)??

PS: we are okay with staying in hostels and just looking to explore, not luxury.
Awaiting the word of wisdom from all :):D

That trip will be difficult with your budget, because already your flight to Bangkok from Delhi eats up more than half of it.
Have you seen Thailand yet? Better stay there and go see places. If Cambodia is must, you could take a bus to Siem Reap in Bkk, stay there a few days, see Angkor Wat, then return. Airasia has the cheapest flight from Bangkok Don Muang, but it eats up too much of your budget. In Siem Reap you find very good hotels for very little money, much less costly at much higher quality than e.g. in Paharganj Delhi.

First look at your flight options here:

Hey @atala : Thanks for your response

We are planning to take flight from Kolkata. Then would it fit the budget. If not then how much would do.

I could see if I can squeeze in more funds

In that case, to save money you should fly with Air Asia from Kolkata, and book a through flight to Siem Reap, so that you can stay in transit and do not need to buy the Visa on Arrival (VoA) for Thailand at Don Muang airport which is 2000 Baht, at the moment Rs 3800.

Edit: CCU-DMK is less, much better than from DEL. So you have more money for other expenditures. The flight CCU-DMK (low cost carrier airport of Bangkok)-Siem Reap return is roughly half your budget mentioned. So you have enough for other things (entry to Angkor Wat is US$ 37 for one day, or $ 62 for 3 days, $ 72 for 7 days). 3 days is considered enough generally. Siem Reap is a cool place to explore by itself. If you rush it one day is also enough to see the main sites of A. Wat.

Do recommend 3 days in Angkor Wat (Siem Reap), a amazing place. No Idea of prices. Do not know if they still allow it but wife & me hired small motorbikes with driver that took us around (long time ago), if not there are bicycles for hire, 2 years ago on a Cambodia bicycle trip went around the sites. Try and include Banteay Srei.
Good luck

TLI (Too Little Information)

Don't do it !

But if you insist, and have 35K INR (approx 550USD) for 10 days. So let's begin by understanding some of the basics listed below.

  • Where in Cambodia and Vietnam do you want to go ?
  • What do you want to do, and see in those two countries ?
  • How much do you think you have to fork out for Airfare+Visa fees ?

Hey
My bad for too little details

I am getting inclined to do only Cambodia, I understand otherwise we would be just rushing through places.

I am planning to cover following :
Siem Reap- 3 nights
Sihaknouk Ville - 2 nights
Koh Rong Samloem Island- 1 night
Phnom Penh -1 night

We are looking to explore a bit of the history and not too commercialized spots.

About the airfares and visa: I thought maybe around 20K would suffice. But then maybe I am wrong completely.

Thanks for the help :)

Your spend money after airfare, visa and entry fees is, $150 +1000TBH +$30 plus $62 for SiemReap = $272.

That leaves around $278 for 10 days for Food, Lodging, transportation and incidentals.

Good,no point on being greedy, when one rushes in the end you do not remember anything.
When in Phnom Phen recommend a visit to S21- Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum not a easy visit but it is "History" and give a idea what the Cambodians went through.

If that is per head? if so I think it is doable, maybe a bit tight (street food is good and can get cheap accommodation) but I think worth the effort. The country is changing very rapidly. I noticed the difference between our first visit to my bicycle trip 2 years ago.
Good luck

I did a roughly 10 day Cambodia-Vietnam trip a couple of years back.

Sieam Reap- 3 nights was sufficient- even if you're obsessed with temples.
Then I flew to Saigon via BKK. 3-4 nights there. It's a great city...think Bombay meet BKK but with better food. Loved it there. Stayed in a hostel type cheap place in Bui Vien, the central part. Then flew to Danang to visit Hoi An, which is an amazing quaint little town with canals and the best food you'd get. Morning Glory, this famous restaurant, served the best meal I've had in ages.

35K per head is too little. You'd exceed for sure, even on the cheapest budget. Vietnam and Cambodia are cheap but not so cheap and the air tickets alone will be a bit more than that,no?

Kolkatta - Bangkok return Air Asia Feb 2 - 12, Rs. 10,500.. Without check in hold baggage but Inc.7 kilo hand baggage.

Put all yr 3x kit in one check in bag up to 20 kilos, pay approx 3.5k. for that.

If you keep to Cambodia only it will be less money ,also you have to get a visa for vietnam also.10 days 2 countries I think is pushing it, part of that time will be wasted in airports, check in and so on.I have been to both countries but never in that short a time, what can you see? I assume you arriving Siem Reap and leaving Phnom Phen.

Agree on the money part. Haven't been to Phnom Phen, so can't comment on it, but a 10 day break covering Siem Reap, Saigon and one other place in Vietnam (I picked Hoi An) was very enjoyable and fun. (About 3 days in each place.)
