Bhutan is best enjoyed at a slow pace. In addition you have senior citizens accompanying you.
The Weather also changes in the mountains, the afternoons get too hot and you are better off indoors than on the road. Also I prefer to have 'Safety' high on the list and to ensure, you reach your designated stopover/destination point in daylight. The Key is to have an early start each day..research and chart out your daily schedule/route/stopover/distance/time required from Thimphu going to Central Bhutan.
If you plan to hire a vehicle and go through a travel agent, be selective in hotels you choose...and keep the option of car with driver only (costing) with optional hotel bookings available.
June would be a non-tourist season, so getting hotel bookings should not be challenging. I am not privy to your budget, but most hotel rooms can offer an extra bed (3 in a room), aircon rooms may not be available in Central Bhutan (unless you are looking at star category hotels).
You may look up my post for resource tips...although Permit procedures now need a hotel confirmation & offices closed on weekends and public holidays.

Due to same reason, vehicle and guide may not be readily available. I suggest you take a dedicated guide for better understanding Bhutan which can be facilitated by the tour operator. Recently I arranged a vehicle and stay for my friends (group) from Mumbai through Bhutanese tour operators since after comparision I found that it was cheaper than the tour operators based in Jaigaon (India).
Can you please specify the tour operator in Bhutan who helped you with bookings? I tried contacting few but they are not responsive. In contrast, I am seeing the Jaigaon based operators are responsive.

Also, I see the Jaigaon based operators are offering hotel rates less than the hotel's published rate. This makes me doubtful if they are really going to keep their promise. Please suggest.

Most budget accommodations are not well insulated and the Winter Season is very harsh. I would wait till mid-end March and plan in Spring.

Will anybody advise how to send money for hotel booking, if we book a hotel room in Bhumthang directly with hotelier? the hotelier seems ignorant about the matter. Some asks to pay at time of check-in.But then how can one submit the receipt voucher for the hotel to Phuentshilong Immigration Office for entry permit? I also wonder how the hotelier will deduct the cancellation charge, as they state 50% , if cancelled prior one month. Mahaguru members are kindly requested to enlighten the matter. -bharat shah

As far as my knowledge goes, the Immigration Office at Phuentsolling issues Entry Permit for Thimphu & Paro only. For Bumthang, you will be needing another Permit, which will be issued from Thimphu. So, question of producing of Hotel Voucher for Bumthang at Phuentsolling does not arise. Moreover, I wonder whether Immigration Office insists for proof of Hotel Booking before issuing Entry Permit. When we visited Bhutan, they did not ask for this proof. Please also note that Hotel booking through telephonic message; and thereafter making payment on check in is a very common practice in Bhutan. Therefore, in my opinion, you will not have any problem even if you pay on your check in at your selected Hotel at Bumthang.

Having said this, there is disclaimer from my side: my knowledge pertains to the period when we visited Bhutan a couple of years back, may be you will like to have opinion from the recent travelers to Bhutan.
