Want to visit Vizag, Araku and Jagdalpur after Puja with family. Started planning from today. We've already visited Vizag-Araku, so we are not changing the earlier plan for these places. We are little bit worried about Jagdalpur. We want to visit this place. But we heard that this place is famous as core Naxal area and few days before it is not safe to visit there. Is this information true? If yes then is this place safe to visit at that mentioned time? We have children and senior citizen in our group.

One more question is there. Is there any Govt hotel running for accommodation? We need good and clean budget hotel near railway station as we are planning to catch the train to Vizag in the morning.

Thanks

It was back in 2009 that we visited Jagdalpur. At that time there were no special problems in the town and the surrounding villages.
We stayed in Hotel Rainbow and had a spacious room with 24 hour hot water (according to my diary).
It was part of an organized trip with car+driver so I have no idea about the hotel price.

Saw this late, I stayed in hotel Rainbow in Jagdalpur in 2011 december and travelled solo. You may want to look at my trip report for things to see and some hotel names: http://www.indiamike.com/india/off-t...art-i-t156117/ Getting to the train station wont be a problem if you let your hotel staff know the night before. It's basically a very laid back area so the odd chance that you may not find local transport at the time when you need it to be there always exists.

It's fine actually if you're around the city and in touristy areas includinging Chitrakot Falls, Kutumsar caves, Kanger Ghati national park, Tirathgarh falls, etc. The real trouble begins if you push towards Sukuma, Konta, etc. I went to Dantewara as well and part of that route is not safe at all but you'd need to check the local media for information and speak with your hotel staff before leaving in any direction on any given day.

Feel free to give a shout to shakeel rizvi who helped me get around and translated the local (halbi and gondi) dialects when I visited local markets. If you'd like to go to Kondagaon, Shri Bhupesh Tiwari of Saathi NGO is very helpful and resourceful. Both contacts are available in my trip report.

Let me know if you need specific help.

p.s. Vonkla - interesting to note that you too stayed in the same hotel! It wasn't my first choice - that was Atithi but it was sold out thanks to a BBC crew that had showed up for some reason.

Recently, we drove from Vizag to Jagdalpur to Hyderabad. Stayed at "Naman Bastar" in Jagdalpur, a nice resort. Visited Chitrakoot water falls, Teerathgarh water falls and Kutumsar caves. The route from Vizag to Jagdalpur is very scenic. The drive from Jagdalpur to Hyderabad was fun. The road is non-existent between Sukma and Konta (Kunta). This stretch of ~80KM distance took us 4+ hours. We were advised not to take the other route to Hyd (via Geedam, Bijapur), though Google suggested that route.
