Hi,

I would like to know a good way to get to Chandigarh Sector 43 bus stand from Ambala Cantonment Rail station at about 3AM on 21st Jan. I am traveling on limited funds, so hiring a cab is not an option. Thanks in advance for any help.

Regards.

Bus stand at Ambala Cantonment Rail station is on walking distance. You will find lot of buses for Chandigarh. If you have luggage hire a rickshaw and it will take you to bus. Otherwise come out from Railway station and You will walk to bus stand or sometime buses available on road for Chandigarh. It takes one hour from Ambala to Chandigarh. Chandigarh has bus stand at Sector 17 and Sector 43. Local buses easily available from one to another. Other option is take train up to Chandigarh.
Best Regards,

Thanks a lot for the prompt reply. A few more questions, in case you have the time -

1. What would you suggest - bus or train ? Are both available at 3-4AM ?

2. Would the bus take me directly to Sector 43 bus stand ? My intention is to take the bus to Shimla from there.

3. How far is the Sector 43 bus stand from Chandigarh train station, in case I take the train to Chandigarh ?

Thanks again.

Best wishes.

Then why not to wait at Ambala rail station only, for another train to Kalka station or much better to take BUS directly for Shimla from Ambala only. Both would be available around that hour of night.

Forget Chandigarh.

Thanks for your suggestion. I was not sure that buses for Shimla would be available from Ambala!! If that is the case, you are right. It is best to take the bus to Shimla directly. But I think these are buses coming from Delhi on the way to Shimla, right ? So it might be difficult to find a place to sit?

One last question - Are buses to Shimla available from Kalka station also ? I mean, are there buses which start from Kalka, so I can get a place to sit ?

Thanks for your time. Best wishes.

You will get seats both from Ambala and Kalka.
Why to catch bus from kalka, why not train to Shimla.
Train you will get from ambala to kalka, is connecting train for Shimla, means train for Shimla would not leave till train from Ambala arrives (Hill Queen or Himalayan queen.) Other wise also lot many trains in early morning.

Thanks very much once again for taking the time to clear all my doubts. After considering all the options that you have kindly pointed out, I think it is best to take the bus to Shimla directly from Ambala, as that is the quickest way to reach Shimla. Actually, I will be coming from Kolkata by Amritsar mail, and need to attend some urgent work. So it is vital for me to reach Shimla before 12 noon. I am hoping that even if the train is about an hour late, I should be able to reach Shimla in about 5 hours from Ambala by bus.

Of course, if I had more time, taking the train till Shimla would be the best way.

What do you think, sir ?

Best wishes.

Your best option is bus from Ambala to Shimla, you will be at Shimla before 10am. I am not sure from which Bus Stand at Chandigarh you will get Bus to Shimla. You can confirm with Bus conductor at Ambala if you go to Chandigarh in case you not get direct bus. From Kalka you can also get bus or share Taxi.

Train journey is good for holiday mood. Train take more time from Kalka to Shimla. Getting train ticket at Ambala and Kalka also hastle. Some time long line up at ticket window.

No need to change bus at Chandigarh. You will easily find buses as well as seats at Ambala. These buses come from either from Delhi or Haridwar etc. As you will exit Ambala railway station, you will find yourself under a flyover. Here you will also find many many buses that go to Chandigarh, Shimla, Manali, Dharamshala, Amritsar, Jammu...
You will find no bus from Kalka railway station as bus stand is enough far away from here. Those buses come from Chandigarh. Best option is to catch one from Ambala.

If possible you can take bus from Delhi itself, for Shimla.
Hptdc Volvo night service is good and they leave around 9 PM from Mandi house to reach Shimla by 5 AM.

May I suggest you to take any of the buses (these are limited stop local bus) originating from bus stand opposite to Ambala Cantt and tell the conductor to drop you at ISBT from which buses to Shimla originate.

You will find the conductors very cooperative and he will drop you at right place. You can take bus to Shimla with seats of your choice.

But in Chandigarh two ISBT bus stand, OP mentioned Sector 43 bus stand and website mentioned buses to Himachal ply from there.

Buses from Haryana dropped passenger at ISBT-17 (Interstates), and need to confirm if Bus for Chandigarh to Shimla is available there, Local Bus conductor can confirm it or someone recently traveled Chandigarh to Shimla can tell about it.

As OP will be at Ambala in early morning and need to reach Shimla on time. Otherwise in Chandigarh local buses available from Sector 17 bus terminal to Sector 43 bus terminal. To avoid that hastle Mr. Neeraj Jat Ji recommended to take bus from Ambala to Shimla.
