Common sight for a couple of decades all across north India, I specifically do not visit Delhi during this time of the year.

I remember one incidence from long back, where kids around 8 to 11 years were carrying baseball bats and they made a pulp of the car in front of me, all because it honked while they were passing. I can never forget the fury in eyes of those kids as they pulled out the sole occupant, a man around 75 years or so. By this time a crowd of about 200 Kanwariyas gathered clapping and appreciating the kids to carry on the wonderful work they were doing (One of the most disgusting sights I had ever witnessed or ever will).

I got out and am not ashamed to say that I completely went against my basic nature, became very diplomatic and got the people to leave the poor guy alone who was shaking like hell (He still got slapped and scolded by 'elders'. though, who btw had no idea what happened)

All this in Delhi, and with police vehicle standing right next to the place of commotion. They never bothered to intervene. Seeing those kids, I knew what kind of a country we are turning into. But I am happy that finally the menace is getting some media attention.

I think it is somewhat about 'haves and haves nots' too. These are some of the instances when the have-nots get a chance to be superior and vent their frustration without bothering about the consequences, and they make a full use of it. Seems like this will only increase as financial disparity increases, and in any case in India, what crowd does is always legit.
If you find my posts confrontationist, please bear, I am an old frustrated guy who has nothing better to do than sit on rocking chair and curse the world whole day

My compliments, jituyadavji, on intervening, doubtless at no small danger to yourself.

Small question: why would there be baseball bats in India, and how do you come to recognize them?

I have grown up watching American sitcoms, god bless them, so recognising baseball bat is easy.

As to why baseball bats would be in India, because they are used as a weapon, not kidding. During kawad Yatra, sales of baseball bats goes through the roof. But as they are mostly made to be cheap, and by unorganised sector, the data of number of baseball bats produced will never be available

Stronger police presence

It can be argued, as many countries including the US do, that you need to have overwhelming police force, if you are to enforce the law. With this power, the public must believe it will not be misused, or at least the judicial system offers a remedy if excessive police force is used. Sure there could be abuses, but I'd rather take my chances against police abuse in a court, than having an ineffective law enforcement arm.

At some point, the rule of law must be enforced, and it seems to me that starting with a strong police force, and then putting in place checks and balances, would be the way to go. Otherwise mob mentality will take over every time, and public will mete out (its version of) justice.

An incident which happened to me. About 10 years ago I was driving in town and as the side road merged into the main road a car came zooming past and almost clipped me (this was during a stage in my life where my car was very precious to me and any scratch would have me worrying for ages).

Suddenly the car stops, the driver gets out followed by his passengers, all college kids. The driver a kid of about 17/18 starts swearing and shouting that I almost hit his car. I said sorry but as nothing happened we should move on. I am still in my car, the other kids try and calm the driver down. I have been told never argue with college kids as they have a herd mentality and it could turn nasty.

By this time a small crowd had gathered and they try and calm him down (i think he was trying to act big in front of his friends) but he was still getting madder.

After about 10 minutes it was getting embarassing, (getting shouted at by a knobhead who was young enough to be my son), I got out of the car, opened my back door and took out the chain i use to lock my front gate, I wrapped it around his neck and told him , if you open your mouth again I will take you home and chain you to my front gate.

I was shocked at what I had done, he was shocked, the people around laughed , he said I was mad and said next time he will kill me. He took the chain off and left.

Ofcourse looking back what I did was extremely dangerous but it all worked out in the end.
Lord, Grant me the Serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to hide the bodies of those people I had to kill because they pissed me off.

Superb.

Sadly, I think you'd get a different result these days. Possibly one that proves the point that any weapon produced can be taken off you and used against you

Looking back what I did was extremely stupid. I was lucky not to get hurt.
