Hi guys.
Probably skipping India this year in favour of Ethiopia. I was wondering if anyone knew of any good African travel forums which are similar to Indiamike or is it just a case of using Lonely Planet & Trip Advisor?

Cheers ☺

I find Tripadvisor better than Lonely Planet but never found anything dedicated to other countries. Maybe I never searched properly.

I haven't seen anything like IndiaMike for any other region in the world. Have seen very little in the way of Africa specific forums, and the ones I've seen were more like chat rooms for locals and very chaotic. There's Bootsnall, but you're adequately covered with LP & TA.

You can find anything you need about anywhere in the world on TA. From the home page, tick Destinations under Plan and Book Your Trip. Fill in a destination, whether its general (like a country), region (Rajasthan) or city. The next page you'll get will have a row of options, including Lodgings, Restaurants, Attractions and Forums, among others. For example, there's an India forum, one for every state in India, and one for each city.

I did some research once due the the VoA for Indian nationals (one of the few countries to do so). In general it appears a very promising country to travel to - Lalibela churches, Gondar city, Semien mountains and finally (for the adventurous), the danakil depression.

I understood that the churches are possible to visit without a guide and the rest will require increasing levels of preparation and assistance with the danakil visit requiring extreme support (including an armed guard). Gondar requires a good guide and Semien requires porters / hiking assistance.

Apart from the domestic flights to Lalibela and other major cities (roads are bad), it didn't appear expensive to me (and I live and work in India). It is also safe for the most part though nothing like India (if there's a robbery, it will be armed and dangerous).

The trip never came to pass but LP is a particularly good bet to start off with.

Hi guys!
Oh my goodness. I can't believe this was my last thread 6 months ago Time flies when you're fun... or working your butt off.

My Africa trip went down the plughole. (Ethiopia's Danakil depression was at one bit looking likely but bosses at worked dropped a bombshell. Due to the lull of business in the summer, we are having planned shutdowns, which basically means staff will have to use their holidays as part of these weekly closures. There's another closure coming up at Christmas too so it kind of put me off visiting a new country with the paltry 2 weeks holidays I now have left. Oh well that's the bad news. The good news is I'm still happy to go over to India for two weeks and see a couple of my favorite cities again .... possibly October, so that's something to look forward too. God I hate work. You put all the extra hours in when needed and then they #### you about at short notice

So I think I need to read up on the Indian Visa thing, it's all changed??

later

if your looking at going for 2 weeks may be worth considering looking at a last minute 2 week return charter flight and an e visa.
Not sure how cheap the charter flights to Goa will get and whether Goa is a suitable starting point for your 2 weeks.
Also the Charter Flight season doesn't start until November.

Hi Dan
I was going to book an Air India flight while they were cheap 450.
Goa's still on my list of places to visit but I'll wait and see if I can get more time off for next years holiday. I think once our the new holiday year starts in next April, I'm going to book a many weeks off a possible (5) before our bosses start telling us about saving weeks for upcoming shutdowns.

Cheers

a couple of years ago I managed to get a 2 week charter a few days before departure for 199 but now with the e visa's being easy(I hope) I think the availability of last minute charters may be limited too.

199! blimey and I thought 450 was cheap!

The evisa thing was temping (cheap?) but alas I've no scanner/printer or software for mucking with photo sizes, so I can't go that way at the moment. I've thrown my old passport too and now realise that was a bad mistake for the online application.
