According to this article:

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/...=.872a44c73e31

India ranked as the most racially intolerant country. I *KNOW* this study is partially flawed because they rank Sweden as "racially tolerant" which I know is not the case after spending 3 years there. Of course the study was also conducted by Swedes, go figure.

Anyway...does this correlate with your experience in India?

Exclamation troll bait

This study is methodologically flawed*; as many people in research design would tell you! No student after Freshman year would design and write a study on just one metric, and one data point.

[* Pedagogical issues with the study are outside the scope of this forum ]
[ You actually went hunting for an article on race to post here The study was published by WP in 2013 - It is considered trollish ]

We are racist to only those who have either darker skin than us or smaller eyes.

I am sure India is racist in many ways. On the other hand, our police don't routinely shoot unarmed minorities as they are walking away, and are then acquitted just by claiming that they "felt threatened" by the person daring to walk away and because they thought that person's hand was a gun. So it's comme ci comme ça.

In South Africa they used to shoot unarmed majorities.

Of course India invented racism: just as it invented everything else. The vedas and the puranas are full of unflattering comments about mlechhyas, dasyus and what have you(se).

And as for mad racing near Delhi airport - how does one do that in a permanent traffic-jam?

Disappointing. You keep spreading misinformation over and over on this forum.

Mleccha was meant to be used for non-dharmic (read non-hindu) people, who lived a life of savages, which was the case millennia ago anyways; not so much about race/ skin color. During vedic times some hindus were almost white skinned, such of those who lived in Iran, Afghanistan and regions farther west and north. And at the same time some hindus down south were/are almost black. None of the latter were mlecchas by definition in spite of the color. On the other hand lot of present day hindus qualify to earn the ‘title’ of mleccha for the life style choices they make.

PS: That is one reason hindus were forbidden to travel to far off lands by sea those times- ‘ dont cross oceans, barbarians live all around us, whilst we lead a very civilized life here, for you will return home a barbarian yourself’.

@ Grant. Assuming that you are from Los Angeles you sound bizarre accusing India of racism. I digress. Let me share a story here. Years ago, there was this young Brazilian white guy who complained of German racism to me one fine day. We both were trainees there at that time. I was surprised. You ARE white for gods sake I assured him. He went ahead and clarified that his eyes and hair are nearly black and hence whenever he travels by bus locals avoid sitting next to him! Some Indians prefer paler skin as it is somewhat in short supply there but that is not racism though. There is no hatred for darker skinned people, they are not looked down upon and are not ‘inferior’ in any manner.

PS: btw you better stop using the abbreviation LA and solve the prevailing confusion once and for all, rest of the world doesn’t know what LA stands for)

Is India the most racist country in the world?

Actually it might be the one American city we can mostly recognise by its initial nickname.

Even NYC confused me when I first encountered it, but LA? Always known that one.

As ever, Surya, your scholarship is enviable. But real-world application might be a bit off.

Anyway, this is one of those threads, so we might as well join in with some nonsense or other.

It is hard to really discuss Indian culture with a lot of people who have been here as visitors. To dive in the deep end with someone who has not... It can only be meaningless. No shared experience. No proper frame of reference. Can't be done.

For what it's worth, though, my answer would be... "No." Probably not even close.

To ask if India is the most racist country in the world is akin to asking if America is the most caste-ist country in the world.

You can say "no way! we don't have caste" in much the same way Indians can misleadingly say, "hey, we're all broadly the same race and so we don't know or understand racism like the west does."

Both answers are, arguably, true. And yet, patently false.
