Greetings to all India travel experts... this is my first post in Indiamike, I joined because I was so pleased to see it was back on the net!!

I am planning to attend the September Festival in Leh and I'm at the stage of gathering info. I'd like to go from Shimla to Manali, (and also Manali to Leh) by shared jeep if possible, as I already endured, together another with 40-odd carsick people , a couple of crazed kamikaze mountain bus drivers last year and I'm not looking forward to reliving the experience. I'm just hoping jeeps might a be safer alternative. I couldn't afford to pay 1 whole jeep or taxi by myself, however.

Anyway, someone has said to me there isn't such a service as shared jeeps from Shimla to Manali. Could anyone confirm one way or the other, please? Thanks.

Hello Piri Piri - Welcome to IndiaMike! I went by Taxi from Shimla to Narkanda and was scared to death of that road (is that a road ). There were several times when we only had two car wheels on terra firma. . Everyone says that bigger vehicles rule in India but I'm not sure they were talking about travel on those little yak paths (I mean roads ) in the mountains. Don't know about shared jeeps out of Shimla but I am sure some of the IM mountaineers will be along shortly to assist you!
We shall not cease from exploration, and the end of all our exploring will be to arrive where we started and know the place for the first time. ~

Hi Piri, You would have to get a local or tourist bus from Shimla (i prefer local) tourist buses tend to be a bit boring! From Manali there are plenty of share jeeps going to Leh they charge FRONT SEAT(1ST CLASS) RS1200 MIDDLE SEAT(2ND CLASS) RS1000 REAR SEAT (NO CLASS don't do it!) rs800 but be aware the drivers are usually from Manali/Vashisht & really put their foot down & can go a lot faster than buses (it takes around 16hrs). The festival in sept is great make sure you get there for the opening ceremony on 1st sept when everyone dresses in traditional clothing. If you plan to fly back book your ticket well in advance they sell out at this time if you go back by road be aware that the official closing date is 15th sept however sometimes it is open up to 4 wks after this depending on weather. kk

OK, so that's no shared jeeps from Shimla to Manali. I'll have to bus it then. I can see myself loading up on anti-sickness pills. I'm a hopeless mountain lover, really. And from Manali to Leh in shared jeep, that's allright... it must be worth paying for a front seat and gaze - speed allowing - as the scenery unfolds. Thanks for the tip about being in Leh by September 1st, I'm looking forward to it. Haven't decided whether to leave by air or overland yet, I'll look into it.

Thanks for your posts, they're welcome help.
