Any insights to a bus journey from Hampi to Gokarna?

1. What's the road condition like?
2. Are there any bus operators that are better than the rest?
3. Any specific spot for the good ones? I ask coz sometimes the private operators have a different departure area.

muchas gracias

The road condition is fairly good. When I have made this journey in the past I have just used local Government buses. Of course it means changing a few times but if you set off about 7.00am from Hampi you should arrive in Gokarna mid afternoon. The buses are as follows;

Hampi - Hospet

Hospet - Hubli

Hubli - Karwar

Karwar - Gokarna

You should be okay if you avoid Northern Karnataka, but be aware that due to the border tension with Maharashtra over the status of Belgaum, many bus services between the two states have been suspended after some buses were burnt there yesterday.

Wikipedia has a good page on Gokarna
Quote:
Gokarna is about 453 km from Bangalore, 240 km north of Mangalore and about 59 km from Karwar. It is between the Gangavali and Agnashini rivers and situated along the Karwar coast by the Arabian Sea. It is near the college towns Suratkal and Manipal.

Gokarna can be reached by buses and maxicabs from Kumta (36 km), Ankola (25 km) and Karwar (59 km) on National Highway 17( NH-17 ). Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) also runs long-journey buses from many cities like Goa, Bangalore and Mangalore. Private buses (Vijayanand Roadlines - VRL, Sugama, Sea Bird, etc.) operate night journeys from the capital city of Bangalore to Gokarna daily. It can be reached by train Konkan Railway on the Mumbai to Mangalore route. The railway station is 6 km away from the town.

Thanks. Read about it in the papers. Maybe train via madgaon is the better way probably.

Presently there is no tension in north Karnataka. Karnataka is very silent and safe place to travel and journey. You can make your journey without any tension.

If you want to travel by Government Buses, then trvel like below.
HAMPI - HOSPET

HOSPET - HUBLI (You may get direct buses to Gokarna)

HUBLI - ANKOLA (You may get direct buses to Gokarna)
(Do not go to KARWAR. Get down in ANKOLA)

ANKOLA - GOKARNA

There are some private bus operators like Paulo Travels, etc. But they will not follow the timings. You have to book it well in advance.

Just to add on to this thread --

From Gokarna to Hampi the public bus leaves at 7pm daily. From Hampi to Gokarna is a lot more difficult, as the locals in Hampi will tell you that there is no local bus from Hospet to Gokarna because they want to promote their own tourist sleeper bus, which will cost around 500-600 rupees. The government bus, I'm guessing, would have been something between 100-200 rupees.

The tourist sleeper bus however is a terrible route, it begins around 7pm in the evening but at 2am drops off all passengers going to Gokarna in the middle of a quiet road at around 2am to wait for a connecting bus. All the other passengers in the sleeper are heading towards Goa, so those are fine. For those stuck in the middle of the road, it will be a cold and long wait for a cramped connecting bus ride to Ankola, following which, they will try to make you take autos to the town! When this happened to my bus all the backpackers on it (who had been on it only because no one could find out information about the local buses) refused to get down to pay the auto drivers more money, and the tourist bus driver had to finally drop us at our intended destination (Gokarna Town) with no additional charge. It was needless to say, a very tiring journey.

Best thing to do is to probably take the local buses, but the KRSTC bus company phone number is always engaged, so it will be hard to find out timings. If you have time on your side, just go to the Hospet bus station early and figure out the connections from there, there might be less certainty, but it will cost a lot less than the options that the travel agents in Hampi try to promote.
