Delhi - Jammu - Katra, Road Conditions Please !!

I am planning to go to Maa Vaishno Devi Shrine next weekend. I guess from Delhi to Katra would be a drive of roughly 650km.

Just wanted an update on the road conditions and the best way there.

Delhi - Ambala - Ludhiana - Pathankot - Jammu - Katra

OR I have heard of another way Via Chandigarh and Bhakra Nangal ?

Which is the fastest route ?

Driving to Ma Vaishno Devi

Hi
The NH 1 is excellent from Delhi to Ludhiana to Ambala to Jalandhar.
Depends on what time you leave Delhi.., there may be heavy truck traffic enroute.
But the road is good.
From Jalandhar to Pathankot is a nightmare full of potholes, and we decided to avoid that route in September.
We took the route from Jalandhar to Amritsar to Pathankot, which is a bit longer but we stopped at the Golden temple.
Pathankot to Jammu is a 100 km stretch where 4 laning is in progress almost half the way.
Jammu Katra is fine except for heavy traffic.
Do ask for further info as required.

If Amritsar is not on the plans, there is no question of going to Amritsar all the way. More this is the best route, forget the other one.

if we take a detour via Amritsar, how much Kilometers would be Extra ?

Initially I thought of starting at night, but I do not want to mess with fog, so I will be starting at 5 am.

The decision to go via Amritsar was taken in view of the terrible road conditions between Jalandhar and Amritsar. You just can't forget it once you've been on it!

National Highway 1 goes from Delhi to Amritsar, where the Golden Temple is. The highway is in good condition - 4 lane till Ludhiana, 4 laning in progress along the rest of the way.
For Jammu you don't have to go to Amritsar, but in September last we came to know taht the stretch between Jalandhar and Pathankot was in very bad shape.
The NH 1 A takes off from Jalandhar to Pathankot and a further 100 km to Jammu. This is the logical route to follow and the cab driver will manage to negotiate the potholes better than in a self driven car. Go for an SUV like Scorpio or a Qualis or Innova if possible.
Alternate route: Delhi Ambala Chandigarh Rupnagar Hoshiarpur Tanda - meeting NH 1 A at Tanda. Less traffic. Drive thru citrus orchards and along western Yamuna canal.

Delhi to jammu by road !!

Hey guyz, i came back frm jammu on 2nd july 2010. Road was fine as compared to 2009. I leave delhi at 5pm & reached jammu at 4am sharp!(prob. takes 11 hour drive)
It waz fun driving at night as i got through my own car.
Road conditions were much better than previous year.
Road till jalandhar z awesum to drive on. after tht u hv to be more caution/carefull at drive coz of one-way, till pathankot!
sumhow toll tax suck's pocket  odrwiz it z beared by evRy1. lol
If u are planning to go to j&k i suggest go frm ur own vehical, dn't opt for train!
It z nt tht much difficult to drive on a long route after ur hands get set after driving 100 km or so...[happy]
sO go n enjoy.

Hi Shashank,

Greetings for the day....!!!!

I would suggest the first route:

Delhi - Ambala- Ludhiana- Jalandhar-Pathankot-Katra

The road conditions are fine as compared to 2009...i was in this route in Mid May.....!!!!

Its a two lane till bhogpur & after that single lane.....!!!! i would suggest to start early morning say at 4am (if possible).

Dont take Nangal route....its in a damn bad shape.....!!!!!

Hey guys,
I am planning to drive down to Vaishno Devi from Delhi on 12th Nov'2011.Initially the plan was for Amritsar, but it later changed (Maa ka bulava).
Well i need a little help guys, please provide the latest update on the road conditions.i wanted to leave at 4 A.M. on 12th. Please provide information regarding pit stops, whats famous on the way and what not to miss.
i also need help in locating the accommodation in Katra. i have been there many a times and have stayed in Chinaar guest house and close by hotels. This time i wanted to try something different, since i have my own vehicle (i10). Is there any beautiful place to stay some where close to nature, i don't mind going a little more km to find a place.
Please help
