Hello All,

Does anyone know what happened to the old Harley Davidson taxis that used to ply through New Delhi?

I used to love riding on those - but I noticed a few years back they all vanished!

I assume they were outlawed by the clean air policy or somthing like - but where did they all go?

Just curious!

Chris.

Are you sure they were Harleys? If I remember correctly, they were called "phat phats" and were manufactured by Enfield.

Hi Raos

Definitly Harleys!

They were huge 3 wheeler conversions that could carry a dozen people. They used to have a stand running from Palika Bazar

I have a photo somewhere I'll try to find and post

The last avtars of this type could be loosely called HD. The original machines had gone through so much alteration & replacements by indigenous parts that these emerged as a new species altogether.
These have been taken off the road the owners have been provided with covered jeeps converterted to a micro bus. But these are also named "phat phat" service although no phat phat.

Phat-phati - A modified Harley-Davidson which was used as a taxi between the 1960s and 80s. Now extinct because of pollution issues, this vehicle was often reffered to as the "phat-phati" for it's characteristic sound. Update: Phat-phatis were banned from Delhi around 2002 in efforts to bring Delhi down in the most-polluted-cities list! Today Delhi hosts a public transport system based on CNG (natural gas), a very clean fuel. All buses and auto-rickshaws use this. A Metro Rail System is also in progress, the first train began running in December 2002

Some of them landed in Delhi after WW ll, left behind a brigade of retreating yanks from SE Asia who had stop over in Delhi and were flying out lighter. Soon after independence there were acute transport crises and some ingenious mechanics slapped old Willy gear box on the power plant and cobbled together the seating plan. It worked great as we can see they use to ply between CP and chandani chowk and CP to Karol Bagh.
