3rd week in may. Is the road open ?====no one really knows--maybe a bit early, maybe just fine. Go to manali and wait, when road is open you go. Check other posts about this area and have best information, and make decision based on this. I am guessing "Roadeo Avalanche " is the model of your cycle--you do your own research, you put your travel/ camping kit together--you load up your bicycle and make sure everything fits just nice--then you ride around the roads where you live-keep doing this until your travel kit becomes your best friend, so you know where every piece of your kit lives on your bike--when you are one with your machine, you may be ready to do this journey--only you will come to know this. In gathering all this information you will learn that their are lots of good places to camp on Manali--Leh road. Lots of cyclists have successfully done this journey.

Trekking Manali - Leh Route

Hi IndiaFans,
Im Denis from Germany and planning a walking Trek from Manali to Leh. At the moment I stay in Delhi, and want to start the trek at the middle of May (round about the 20th of May).
So here my questions:
When does the route open exactly (or where can I get the information)?
Is it possible that I do this on my own?
Are there possibilities to sleep in "Hotels" on the way every day or do I need camping equipment?
How much km should I walk every day?

Thank U beforehand
Denis

No one knows if the road will be open then and what condition the passes will be in. What's for sure is that there will be LOTS of snow, low temperatures (esp. at night), lots of mud and water during daytime and serious risk of avalanches and the like. If you are going to do this then you should have full camping gear, food and at least basic survival and navigation skills. Else it's just foolish and you might rejoin the list of people 'lost' while trekking in that area. Except for a couple of spots along the way there is no mobile phone coverage, meaning that if something goes wrong you'll either have to save yourself or gamble that some good samaritan will pass. Gambling with potentially your life at stake is generally not a good idea.
