I had a along desire of venturing into the streets of this town someday and last Saturday of December 2013 was just another perfect day for a short trip. Usually I love visiting small towns and villages far and near from my hometown of Barrackpore to spend the weekends, ..need to free my soul from the entitlements of the family life...after-all I am the legless soul. The cold was much more persistent in these parts of the state and would be very comfortable for walking within the town. Jacket ...checked...gloves and scarf ..checked....camera...checked. ...oh wife would be going too. It was 6 am and the weather was still foggy. We had to ride(motorbike) to the Barrackpore rail station station, 5 Kms from home which was not at all comfortable....

We reached the ticket window at 6 30 and I vanished to take a puff of cigarette with a sip of chai, my wife has no interest in both. The ticket to Krishnanagar and return would cost Rs 40 per head and we boarded the 6.55 train which was on right time. Other than the chilling winds the journey was not at all eventful. We reached Krishnanagar city station at around 9.30 AM.
If a problem can be solved there is no use worrying about it. If it cant be solved, worrying will do no good ~ H.H

The station premises was bustling with tourists and daily passengers and the smell of fried puris dragged me towards a small food joint. There were buses calling for passengers to various destinations, I was unfamiliar with the names. 4 big puris and alu(potato) curry for Rs 10 was lip smacking. Last night I had mugged up the city map so it was not difficult to track my first destination. Bypassing the rickshaw pullers and curious street peddlers we soon reached a beautiful corner park, a lane on the right side from there would take you right towards the palace of Raja Krishnachandra.

The palace moat has become a play ground for different birds(those pics I will keep aside for Naveena di's thread) with no maintenance the water had turned dark with garbage all along the banks. We saw many langurs sitting lazily on the roof of houses but I see them quite often so did not bother to take out my camera. We came across some very good gentlemen who worked in a sawmill(from there you take a shortcut to the palace) and were enjoying a break in the warm sunlight I was so touched with their behaviour(on asking the way) that I could not resist my self taking a group photo.

The current palace is well maintained and would be a remarkable spot for history lovers. Unfortunately my charming smile did not work here and we were not allowed to enter the premises. However the grounds still bears some old dilapidated structures which were actually the parts of the old palace built in the style of a boat with arch gates and moats all along.

this was actually the kacharibari or the outhouse/office...now a school

the gate...still standing

I started this tread with a heading of religion because of the two most important places I planned to visit. First being the Krishnanagar Cathedral, which I longed jaunt since my school days. I am a half Christian(born Hindu), as I was educated at a convent and was an ex choir boy, way before my mom took me to a temple. I learnt Our Father... much before some one taught me the Gayatri Mantra. Now that's a different story altogether. If you are not religious, you still might want to visit the Cathedral due to its explicit art and serenity. We came across a small fair near the gates which runs every Christmas eve and the locals call it the Borodin Mela(the X'mas fair ).

a clay doll shop at the fair.....

A trip to Krishnanagar is not complete without paying homage to Ghurni. I couldn't be there but anyways there's always a next time. You can have an idead of the place from this TR by our beloved Asish da. http://www.indiamike.com/india/west-...-trip-t184106/
a superb read
I pulled this piece because we saw some clay modellers at the fair with their lovely collection of clay dolls.
